Powerhouse teams continue to pad their schedules by playing over-matched opponents instead of giving us what we want: powerhouses vs. powerhouses. You sometimes wonder if they aren’t competing with each other to see who can run up the biggest score, more than against the pathetic team they’re actually sharing the field with. In response, I’m going to post a weekly fantasy. I’ll take the two largest offensive scores rolled up by ranked teams and created a game between them by listing all their scoring plays as if they occurred in the same game. WEEK 7: Toledo vs. Baylor We get a David vs. Goliath match-up in this one and the three time defending champion Baylor Bears try to win a fourth in a row over little Toledo, who has been tearing through the MAC. FIRST QUARTER 14:02 The Bears waste no time, scoring in the first minute: Seth Russell run for 16 yds for a TD, Bears 7 Rockets 0 10:07 Going for the knock-out: Seth Russell pass complete to Corey Coleman for 2 yds for a TD, Bears 14 Rockets 0 4:43 They have to settle for a field goal- will it matter?> Chris Callahan 36 yd FG GOOD Bears 17 Rockets 0 SECOND QUARTER 13:09 And we have lift-off: Terry Swanson run for 9 yds for a TD Bears 17 Rockets 7 12:21 A quick response: Seth Russell pass complete to Corey Coleman for 11 yds for a TD, Bears 24 Rockets 7 6:25 And neither does a response to the response: Phillip Ely pass complete to Michael Roberts for 9 yds for a TD. Bears 24 Rockets 14 2:52 Waco, we have a problem: Kareem Hunt run for 4 yds for a TD, Bears 24 Rockets 21 1:42 The Bears again settle for 3: Chris Callahan 36 yd FG GOOD Bears 27 Rockets 21 1:11 They do it again and it cost them: Chase Murdock 45 Yd Return of Blocked Field Goal Bears 27 Rockets 28 THIRD QUARTER 13:25 What the heck is going on here? Phillip Ely pass complete to Corey Jones for 55 yds for a TD, Bears 27 Rockets 35 9:45 The Bears have to make a comeback: Corey Coleman 33 Yd pass from Seth Russell Bears 34 Rockets 35 9:06 The Rockets go deep: Phillip Ely pass complete to Cody Thompson for 88 yds for a TD, Bears 34 Rockets 42 5:39 Back and forth: Seth Russell pass complete to Jay Lee for 36 yds for a TD, Bears 41 Rockets 42 4:06 Forth and back: Phillip Ely pass complete to Diontae Johnson for 22 yds for a TD, Bears 41 Rockets 49 1:31 The beat goes on: Seth Russell pass complete to Jay Lee for 52 yds for a TD Bears 48 Rockets 49 0:15 And on and on: Michael Julian pass complete to Zach Yousey for 14 yds for a TD, Bears 48 Rockets 56 FOURTH QUARTER 11:53 Bears still have some claws left: Shock Linwood run for 11 yds for a TD, Bears 55 Rockets 56 9:25 Twilight’s last gleaming: Damion Jones-Moore run for 21 yds for a TD, Bears 55 Rockets 63 1:21 Bears tighten it as far as it can go: Jarrett Stidham pass complete to Trevor Clemons-Valdez for 9 yds for a TD, Bears 62 Rockets 63 Why didn’t they go for 2? They must have hoped they could get the ball back. Or maybe they didn’t realize they were playing Toledo. Baylor out-gained Toledo 693-611. They rushed for 304 and passed for 389 and had 34 first downs. The Rockets rushed for 238 and passed for 373 with 23 first downs. Seth Russell was 20 for 33 for 380 yards and 5 touchdowns but his Rocket counterpart, Philip Ely was 18 for 27 for 327 yards and 4 scores. The amazing Russell also carried 14 times for 160 yards and a score. (Maybe having Eric Dungey carry the ball for us isn’t such a bad thing if Baylor is doing the same thing.) Terry Swanson led Toledo with 97 yards on only four carries for one score. Corey Coleman had a fabulous day for Baylor with 10 catches for 199 yards and 3 scores. Another Corey, Jone, led Toledo with 7 catches for 90 yards and a score although Cody Thompson, with only 2 catches, had more yards with 110, due to that 88 yarder. We missed a great game!
