Powerhouse teams continue to pad their schedules by playing over-matched opponents instead of giving us what we want: powerhouses vs. powerhouses. You sometimes wonder if they aren’t competing with each other to see who can run up the biggest score, more than against the pathetic team they’re actually sharing the field with. In response, I’m going to post a weekly fantasy. I’ll take the two largest offensive scores rolled up by ranked teams and created a game between them by listing all their scoring plays as if they occurred in the same game.
WEEK 3: Oklahoma State vs. Arizona
Mississippi was unable to make a repeat appearance as Alabama held them to 43 points, (they are still averaging 64 points a game). So instead we get two new contestants: the Cowboys of Oklahoma State and the Wildcats of Arizona.
FIRST QUARTER
14:15 The Cowboy jump out in from on Devante Averette’s 6 yard fumble return
Cowboys 7 Wildcats 0
12:33 The add to their lead when Chris Carson runs 26 yard for a score.
Cowboys 14 Wildcats 0
8:06 Arizona gets on the board with Anu Solomon’s 1 yard run
Cowboys 14 Wildcats 7
2:25 Okie State answers with a Ben Grogan 24 yard field goal
Cowboys 17 Wildcats 7
SECOND PERIOD
14:19 The Cats come roaring back! Samajie Grant catches an 8 yard pass from Anu Solomon.
Cowboys 17 Wildcats 14
10:25 The take the lead on David Richards’ 27 yard pass from Anu Solomon.
Cowboys 17 Wildcats 21
8:35 And they quickly add to their leas on Nick Wilson’s 1 yard run.
Cowboys 17 Wildcats 28
5:25 The Cowboys temporarily stem the tide with Chris Carson’s 1 yard Run
Cowboys 24 Wildcats 28
3:33 And here comes the Cats again: David Richards 14 yard pass from Anu Solomon.
Cowboys 24 Wildcats 35
1:02 The Cowboys stampede back: Jhajuan Seales 6 yard pass from Mason Rudolph
Cowboys 31 Wildcats 35
0:14 But just before the half: Nick Wilson 1 yard run give Arizona a 34 point quarter.
Cowboys 31 Wildcats 42
THIRD PERIOD
13:14 Okie State tightens it up again: David Glidden 46 yard pass from Mason Rudolph.
Cowboys 38 Wildcats 42
11:17 Solomon wisdom continues: Johnny Jackson 13 yard pass from Anu Solomon.
Cowboys 38 Wildcats 49
7:24 The Wildcats build their lead: Jerrard Randall 72 yard run.
Cowboys 38 Wildcats 56
2:33 Ben Grogan’s 43 yard Field Goal is a weak answer.
Cowboys 41 Wildcats 56
FOURTH QUARTER
13:50 The Wildcats continue to run wild: Jerrard Randall 73 yard run.
Cowboys 41 Wildcats 63 (a 24-56 run since the first quarter)
11:11 The Cowboys start a furious rally: Marcell Ateman 13 yard pass from J.W. Walsh.
Cowboys 48 Wildcats 63
10:40 State continues the charge back into the game: Rennie Childs 1 yard run.
Cowboys 55 Wildcats 63
9:54 But Arizona responds: Brandon Dawkins 43 yard run.
Cowboys 55 Wildcats 70
5:45 And they retake control: Zach Werlinger 11 yard run.
Cowboys 55 Wildcats 77
1:45 But the Cowboys aren’t done yet: Raymond Taylor 58 yard run.
Cowboys 62 Wildcats 77
1:25 And the game ends as it began: Deric Robertson 22 yard fumble return.
Cowboys 69 Wildcats 77
Oklahoma State ran for 217 yards and passed for 312 more but those numbers were dwarfed by Arizona which ran for 499 yards and passed for 293, a total of 792 yards (with 36 first downs) to 529 (22). What kept it close was the 7 turnovers the Cowboys defense caused, two resulting in touchdowns.
For Arizona, Anu Solomon was 25 for 35 for 285 yards and 4TDs. Jerrard Randall had 149 yards and 2TDs on only 3 carries. Nick Wilson had 149 yards and 2 more scores on 19 carries. David Richards caught 8 passes for 120 yards and two scores.
For Oklahoma State, Mason Rudolph, (didn’t he used to be a golfer?) was 17 for 23 for 280 yards and 2 scores. Chris Carson ran for 104 yards and 2 scores on 17 carries. David Glidden led with 3 catches for 67 yards and a score.
We missed a great game!
