Okay guys and gals,

I think we've got a good contingent of football minds on this board. That being said, I'm looking for some new and different ideas on conditioning. We've got staples we've used for years but I wanted to hear from some other sources other means of conditioning you may have done as a player or used as a coach. Any input is greatly appreciated!

My days with hair are behind me, but are you looking for something like this?

If staples are no longer effective, may I suggest you start using a nail gun. :D

I think the new staff has been pretty innovative...have read stuff about them using yoga. And last I knew, they were doing some things with neck strengthening too.

I see where this is going.

My summer training always included about 45 minutes of plyometrics, and 45 minutes of circuit training followed by about 30 minutes of sprints 4 days per week. We also did a 7 on 7 league on our off day. As for in season we did our daily sprints after practice, and on Mondays which were typically film days we would do a 100 yard sprint for every point surrendered as well as a 40 yard box which was a sprint, crab walk, back pedal and crossovers for 40 yards each. we would do this for 3 minute spurts, 5 times

After righting this i realized that i have found myself in a position where i sweat sitting still and breathe heavy walking the stairs

Oh geez, we did something like that, called the square instead of the box though.

Thanks for reminding me of Hell.

As a player the worst thing we did (best conditioning drill) was timed full field lines.

20 yd line, back
Half field, back
20 yd lime, back
End line, back

Under 1:30. I remember this drill vividly so it must have been hard...

Weighted thrusters. Nothing better for improving explosiveness, power.

do you use golf club weights for that? sounds dangerous and maybe illegal

What age group are we working with? The problem I'm seeing with current youth sports conditioning is 1. moving into using heavy explosive movements before they have control with just body weight movements (I was recently treating a high school aged football player with bilateral fractures of his transverse processes on one of his vertebrae. He was to0 weak to do a plank, but his coaches had him doing hang cleans power cleans and thrusters) 2. Doing movements they don't have the proper mobility to perform safely 3. Improper coaching in regard to technique (especially with olympic style movements). I have a friend that is a certified youth strength and conditioning coach. He does all kinds of assessment testing before he even starts exercise. I know he follows a lot of the experts in the field. I can get some stuff from him for you.
