Boatwright Story...

Wow, I had no idea the NCAA has a personal vendetta against the Boatrights.
I thought it was a poor article, but parents should be allowed to accompany their kids on recruiting trips, imo.

They can. The school can't pay for their trip. That's always been a rule. There was some discussion of changing it, but small schools could get crushed trying to fly in, house and feed a parent for each recruit.

According to the article, Ms Boatright's trip was paid for by Derick Rose, a guy who has no connection to UConn. I don't see why that should even raise a flag with the NCAA.

people tend to forget that the NCAA has multiple constituencies to which it has to answer. there are 345 D1 schools and 250 of them will always align against the big boys.

once we get to several super conferences, the big schools can separate from the NCAA and write their own rules. they will pay players, fly families in, etc.

and the little schools will be hosed because they couldn't see the big picture when they had the power. just like the basketball-onlies in the BE conference.

It was paid for by Reggie Rose (Boatright's AAU coach, also Derrick's older brother). Reggie was involved in alot of the Memphis/Calipari stuff, including that he got free travel/room/board when Memphis had road games. He's had a target on his back since then, the NCAA told Boatright's mom to stay away from him, and she didn't.

Being involved with Reggie Rose was the main issue there.

Maybe UConn should expand its exemption request to include a free pass for all rules it considers 'silly'.

Give me a break. If parents were allowed to accept money from third parties, the schools would be falling over themselves to pay these third parties under the table in exchange for influencing parents decisions in the recruitment of their children. Hell, we all know some of this goes on now but at least its difficult to pull off and there are enormous risks for schools that get caught which acts to limit the practice.

Of course a school should pay one parent's way to accompany the kid. The real problem, as others pointed out, is that many of the smaller D1 schools don't want to pay for it so all D1 schools are prohibited. Its a classic reason why the 6 BCS conferences will eventually break off from the NCAA and write their own rules and have their own tournament with all the high profile TV ratings draws.
