1) He has proven to be able to build a program.  Not "rebuild"..."build".  Assumption had 2 winning seasons in 20 years before he got there...he never had a losing season there as head coach.  Holy Cross stunk before he got there.  There was zero history of winning, at least not since the FCS split.  They won their conference in year two under Chesney.  And he kept them there, as they've won or tied for the league title every year since '19.  They missed the playoffs this year, but they tied for the conference title and lost the playoff bid due to the tiebreaker.

2) He has proven an ability to play with and beat teams with better talent.  He logged wins vs Buffalo and Uconn, and played BC and Army tight.  All teams with superior rosters.

I get the concerns about the FCS to P4 jump, and I get the concerns about recruiting.  I share both of them to some degree.  But let's not pretend that guy hasn't done anything and is a glorified HS coach.  He has an overall winning percentage over .700.  He's taken his Patriot League team on the road, under the bright lights of a P5 opponent, and gone toe to toe more than once.
