Recruiting is everything and not being in a Power 5 conference is going to make it tougher and tougher as each year goes by - I don't envy him. CT only has a population of 3.6 million and there are competing schools all over New England so there is a limit to the size of the university and the billions that will be spent. The money is in Fairfield county and they could care less about UConn.
 
You mention some positives but there are negatives as well. The campus is ugly and located nowhere.
 
They built that stupid stadium in East Hartford 30 miles from campus because nobody would drive to Storrs to watch UConn play. As a matter of fact nobody drives to East Hartford either. There was simply no groundswell of support for UConn football anywhere in the state.
 
The economics (including costs) of FBS football are vastly different than those of basketball and recruiting dynamics are different as well. I just do not see how anybody can sustain a top program outside then Power 5.
 
I think the poor guy has made a terrible decision but perhaps he is thinking that the situation is so bad that if he can make it better it will lead to a big job down the road a la DM.
