1989 beat 2012 8-2 Even he couldn't stop them. Both teams loved to run used every opportunity to do so. They sure knew how to finish but nobody plays this game like Sherman Douglas. Even Fab Melo backed up by Rak Christmas and Baye Keita couldn’t handle Derrick Coleman and Billy Owens inside. He didn’t get all those charging calls and couldn’t keep up with the pace of the game. 2003 beat 2010 8-2 Arinze Onukau and Rick Jackson have their way in the middle against Craig Forth and Jeremy McNeil. But Wes Johnson can’t contain Carmelo Anthony’s combination of strength and skills, (there’s a reason why one was an NBA All-Star and another wasn’t). Hakim Warrick dominates Kris Joseph. Andy Rautins couldn’t stop Billy Edelin’s powerful, deliberate dribble drives into the paint. Jardine and Triche have trouble with Kueth Duany’s height. Josh pace hits some floaters and GMAC goes off from three. The Championship Game match-up: 2003 vs. 1989 Forth and McNeill vs. Coleman? Owens vs. Carmelo? (Where is that popcorn emoji?) Hakim Warrick vs. Stevie Thompson? Kueth could give Matt Roe some problems. Sherman Douglas and Gerry McNamara were both great point guards for us but couldn’t have been more different. You can win some bets with this: Sherman hit 37% of his three pointers in 1988-89 while GMAC hit 36% of his in 2002-03. The 89 team didn’t have a lot of depth: Dave Johnson became a fine player but wasn’t one yet. The other leading reserves were Herman harried, Richard Manning, Dave Siock and Tony Scott. The 2003 team ahd the secret weapons of Pace and Edelin, who could devour a team inside while they spread out to cover our other threats. I think the 2003 team was a better half-court team, the 1989 the best running team we’ve ever had. I think the 2003 team was a better defensive team. Let’s look at some numbers: The 1989 team shot 57.5% on two-point shots, (many on the fast break) 37.0% on three points shots, (but only attempted 386 of them: 10 a game) and shot just 61.1% from the line. They were +3.5 on rebounds and +1.8 on turnovers. They gave up 47.0% on two pointers and 35.3% on three pointers, (454 attempts: 12 per game). The 2003 team shot 51.9% from two, 34.4% from three (540 attempts: 15 a game) and 69.4% from the foul line. They were +2.6 in rebounding and +0.7 in turnovers. Their opposition shot 43.6% from two and 30.4% from three (786 attempts, 22 per game). I think there would be enough half-court sets, (favoring the 2003 team) to allow the 1989 team to lose it on missed free throws at the end. Waddyea Think?
