Boeheim wants to pick your brain...

When the old people and ushers allow it then we might have something.

When the old people and ushers allow it then we might have something.

Although I have never had any issues with anyone I've perceived to be "old," I've been told by ushers on multiple occasions to sit down and I've seen it done to others too.

Someone should post that article above the coffee pot in the Dome's employee lounge.

Brains!!!!

I have come to terms with it, though I agree with Jim. My only hope is that someday there's a change in attitude. We don't have to stand all game. I get it, people work all day, may be older, and it's a place to relax and enjoy free time for many. But, it turns into a movie theater at times and on too many occasions. I feel like the crowd puts pressure on the team a lot with the collective emotions that you can hear and feel. We get down too quickly, and don't stay up long enough based on one play.

Love the place, and the fans but know we can do better. Maybe after the walk up, we just need to sit more than other schools. Who knows, I just see the games from the past and how raucous the entire crowd was. We're great road fans. Alumni leaving the area doesn't help having a more vibrant atmosphere. I'll settle for everyone wearing Orange.

If the goal is to have a more raucous and involved crowd, I'd guess that will become less likely as more and more people become preoccupied with their smartphones. And that would go for any venue and not simply the Dome.

I guess JB's point --- what he would like --- is for the current crowd to be more engaged at games. I don't think just standing will get what he wants.

With age --- sometimes --- come money. Some older people have it and younger one's generally do not ... or at least yet.

If JB wants to change the composition of the crowd to get a younger, more vociferous group, then his beef is with the University, not the fan base.

In many ACC schools (Maryland and Duke, for sure), the students sit alongside the court. So Step #1 in bringing noise and vitality to the games would be to move the students into the stands behind the benches. And relocate all those high-value patrons to the end zones or have them bid up the prices of tickets on the other side stand.

Step #2 - would be some sort of discount pricing for local alums or for some other younger, identifiable group allowing them access to the better seats ... and not the third deck. Remember here, we are managing the composition of the crowd and not maximizing revenue. Maximizing revenue is the current strategy.

Now there's some downside to this. Having attended many Maryland games, I can assure you the behavior of the Maryland crowd is among the worst in college basketball. SU crowds are mild, by comparison. And that's without beer being served.

So be careful what you wish for.

But there isn't a chance that the cash-strapped SU Athletic Department is going to allow this. They need the basketball bucks badly at least until football attendance gets back up. And that could be never.

I don't think Step #2 works unless you are selling those tickets without an entitlement to obtain them the following season. We all grow old. This season's younger local alums are next season's blue hairs. If they are "good" seats why would those folks ever give them up to the next generation of younger local alums. If they aren't "good" seats you marginalize the ability of that group to impact the environment. The racuous group of fans in the third deck can only do so much.

You can sell them anyway you want. Don't want an entitlement for ensuing seasons? Don't offer it.

This solution that gets tickets in the hands of younger --- possibly more energetic fans --- is not without problems once you get beyond the students and maybe the alumni.

One solution would be to disable the wi-fi during game action, but then you'd see attendance drop by 50%. The younger generation's addiction to instant social media is appalling... sobering... you name it. Steve Jobs - whether he realized it or not - spawned an entire generation of narcs (narcissists).

Such a first-world problem. We're either #1 or #2 in attendance each year. People are there and will cheer their brains out when momentum gives the opportunity.

Nothing in your post would be a surprise to JB. Don't you agree.

So why then is he complaining about the crowd? What is it he said he wished the SU crowd would do?

Fewer and fewer people in attendance are actually watching the game as they attempt to "document" their experience and communicate with people not at the game.

It all seems silly to me.

I love my phone, but it generally stays in my pocket when I'm in a stadium or arena or at some other sports or entertainment event. And when I'm home, I prefer to watch the game as it's happening and not spend my time making reactive statements on a message board or in a chat room. But that's just me.

Totally agree - I'd rather enjoy the experience. I've also tried the chat room/game threads. I miss way too much of the game when I'm messing around on there or in the game threads. Guess I'm just not very coordinated because I don't know how people do it.

Well you may have that Iggy in your trophy case, but you'll never be a superfan.

At home on the couch there's plenty of idle time during those long commercials.

That's for getting some food, another beer or using the bathroom.

Syracuse Basketball: Jim Boeheim Wants You To Stand Up

I say everything is wonderful. Just wish the student section wasn't stuck to one corner of the dome.
The university has always "screwed the students attending games in the major sport programs,by charging extra for the privilege of going to games. Put the students in a spot where they would be most effective.
