I think it is also its major downfall. Sure it is fun when each team is a reasonable distance from the target score...but when the game isn't close it can possibly extend the game to unreasonable lengths. And as exciting as a contested 15 footer or a three to end the game can be, there are often times games end on a wide open layup or a FT. Not exactly thrilling. Imagine a regional final tied at 77 with a target score of 78. Loose ball in the back court and a foul is called as players fight for possession. Player X to the line needing to make a single FT to end the game. I forgot to add the worst part of elam. The clock stops at the first dead ball under four minutes. If you're up by a decent margin there is an incentive to slow the game down and waste time to get to the four minute mark with the biggest lead possible. If I am up ten with six minutes to go, with only a few team fouls, I am fouling when my opponent gets in their offensive set. I am also using the entire shot clock when I have the ball. A ten point deficit with 6-7 minutes left is very doable, but if I can run a couple minutes off the clock the deficit essentially becomes 17. I would never throw away numerous buzzer beaters, great comebacks, or overtime games away for the elam ending. It's a gimmick and good for a gimmicky event like TBT.
