Bowl Affliation changes for 2020

College Football Bowl Game Changes to Begin in 2020 - Stadium
ACC changes.

ACC now has a tie-in with the Holiday Bowl in San Diego.
Also, if the Big Ten team goes to the Orange Bowl then an ACC goes to the Outback Bowl in place of a Big Ten team.
Plus the Gator Bowl is now exclusively ACC-SEC. No more ACC tie-in with the Music City Bowl.

Personally I'm very happy with those changes. Holiday Bowl is a fun established bowl and San Diego is a fun trip. I was hoping we could get some sort of tie-in with either the Outbank or Citrus even if it's not every year and I love the Gator Bowl too. I can live with losing Music City with those other changes.

San Diego in December is definitely a destination. I don't mind bowls with Pac-12 teams as we don't play them that often due to distance but I would fly to SD to watch us play a Stanford or UCLA type team.
Plus unlike the Belk Bowl the ACC team isn't expected to carry attendance it will be the Pac-12 team's responsibilty to be the anchor.
Since the Big Ten will get 3/6 spots in the Orange Bowl basically every other year an ACC team will get a spot in the Outback Bowl.

Music City is more appealing than Jacksonsville but its a trade I will take anyway.

Man I’m so excited for the gator bowl. My hometown bowl! Hopefully it’s a high level bowl cause I’d be buying front row seats.

Outback Bowl is a great deal imho. I can definitely see if you think Nashville is a more attractive destination than Jacksonville but I feel in general that the Gator Bowl is more prestigious than the Music City.

San Diego
Great place
Fly into LA stay at brothers 2 days
Stay in SD 2 days

So the ACC can get CFP, Orange/NY6, Outback (if B1G is in the Orange) all in the same year? That seems pretty good.

Holiday bowl would be awesome. Especially against ASU.

Throw in the Gator Bowl too.

I assume Camping World too.

Pretty good haul for Florida. Ofcourse, Cuse has set a new standard of ticket sales. We should travel well to all of them.

BTW, the Gator Bowl is close enough drive you can stay in Orlando or Daytona/Cocoa Beach areas and have a pretty easy drive to the game.

One comment on the Outback Bowl: it has the worst TV slot of any New Year's Day Bowl. That needs to improve.

There is a lot of civic pride surrounding the Holiday Bowl in San Diego. The bowl started in 1978 so it is long standing. Average crowds these days hover in the high 40s, but 10-15 years ago, those numbers were in the high 50s and into the 60s (they used to host two bowls per year). What will be interesting is seeing how/if the Chargers departure helps the equation in the long run.

What was formerly known as Qualcomm Stadium is a big-time pit, but it's good for a tailgate and being in/around San Diego for the week makes up for the Stadium.

I am sure the ACC's partnership with this bowl will last 4-6 years and shuffle off to another bowl locale, but this is a solid development for the conference.

I wonder if the Holiday Bowl moves to the new SD State Stadium? Aren't they going to tear down Qualcomm?

If you evaluate things based on payouts and assume those payouts don’t change, this is a series of downgrades for the ACC.

The Citrus pays 8.5 million. The Outback pays 6.35 million. Not a big deal since this is a ‘once in a while’ thing, and the Citrus Bowl is a low end kind of dumpy facility, where Raymond James is a lot nicer. Still hope someday both of these bowls will have ACC anchors.

Also, the Gator pays 3.2 million. The Music City pays 5.65 million. Not a great trade off from that perspective.

But on the positive side, the Holiday has been a relatively big paying bowl, 6.3 million last year. San Diego is a great location to travel to; someplace fresh that I think many, including me, would be very interested to visit. Plus, I think that is just a new bowl for the ACC; it replaces nothing.

Also, no question, the Gator is a better fit geographically and historically for the ACC than the Music City. So overall, I think the changes are good. Good, not great

Here is a list of the new ACC bowl affiliations sorted by payout:

Orange 6.0 million (as semifinal)
Holiday 6.3 million
Camping World 5.8 million
Belk 4.5 million
Pinstripe 4.2 million
Sun Bowl 3.5 million
Gator 3.2 million
Military 2.1 million
Birmingham 1.7 million
Quick Lane 750K

Will the Holiday get to pick a school before the Camping World? Will the Holiday still pay 6.3 million?

Kind of weird to have two ACC vs PAC12 matchups each season but there should always be room for a bowl with a great destination and a big payout.

With many of us on the east coast, Camping World is best for payout/travel. I went. I'd hit the Gator Bowl to escape the NE Winter.

I really like San Diego. Spent a month surfing there, many years ago. I can't justify the travel time, unless I spend a week. Happy to be in that bowl, but I'm not going unless my company freely gives me another week off... Not happening. I'd need to plan that a year in advance. Guessing I'm not alone. Great place to go, but the travel may count many orange out...

San Diego in December would be a fun trip to get away from the cold

As others suggest, San Diego is the headline here.

I have always been envious of others with a tie-in to that game.

This is great news for the ACC and for SU.
