Boy I miss Dick Vitale

He seemed to want to see uconn comeback...maybe just to see a down to the wire game.
The worst part of the broadcast was when they were talking about Dolezajs recruitment, with Shulman acting incredulous that ANYONE would choose Syracuse over some other schools. What a couple douche bags

Is that what you took away from it? I didn't. I saw it as Dolezaj was so impressed with the team that he could cancel the rest of his trips.

Yes, it is. It was said with incredulity, as I said. As in "for some reason, he ended up at SU!" Their entire broadcast is difficult to hear, as if they believe they are calling the lower level game that night, and they want everyone to know it. If we could only be watching Duke, or AZ, or one of the big boys every night, then we'd be getting some real basketball. To quote Vitale, Battle is not a great shooter, he is a streaky shooter. If that was one of his chosen programs, that would have been said very differently, like "Greyson doesn't miss many of those, he doesn't miss many of those baby. UConn better take advantage!" End rant.

Strongly disagree. Shulman pointed out that Dolezaj was also wanted by some big time schools like Florida. He praised Marek all night. He actually defended Syracuse a few times when we went through some abysmal funks while Dick was, for good reason, getting on us. There was a lot of slop in that game and poor basketball from both teams. I think Shulman/Vitale were really good all things considered. I think other broadcast teams would’ve mentally checked out it was that bad at times. Nothing seemed factually incorrect. Battle IS a streaky shooter!

It's pure disrespect for JB and the program. You make good points, but if that game includes one of his preferred programs/coaches, it would be spun and broadcast very differently. That's my point. Give me a thoughtful, tuned in analyst any day of the week over his shilling for the home office and agenda ramblings, to each his own.

I don't have any problem with Vitale's take on Battle, I'm not sure he's wrong. Tyus got his points last night but I wasn't impressed with how he got there.

My bigger problem with Vitale and Shulman is it's like no one bothers with the details of what is actually going on on the floor. Tell us who fouls are called on. Explain calls and things that happen that aren't obvious (two situations in the KU game immediately come to mind). Instead they tell stories and leave us to guess.

Shulman I thought, as always, is on top of things. Pretty much the best in the business. At times it seemed he had to reign in Vitale (who I really don’t mind) which maybe took away from some proper attention. I don’t know. I thought they were generally fine all things considered. There was a lot of terrible basketball to absorb last night. Dick should retire and can’t be messing up Howard vs Battle. He’s an old man. He never really bothered me, however.

Yes, 2 games in a row where we had guys in foul trouble and they never bothered to tell us.

I don’t care for Dick anymore...but last night was about Jimmy V and raising money/awareness for cancer...so that’s why Dick was on the call.

I actually thought their analysis was pretty fair. Both teams looked iffy at best but both teams had kids who played well. Overall I didn’t think it was high level basketball.

The "Above the rim" broadcast on WatchESPN.

Just sayin.
Yeah, I accidentally was tuned in to that last night. Interesting. The camera angles are different, as well as having no commentator audio. I definitely prefer a 'regular' feed, with commentators, no matter how awful. I just attend to what I want. They don't seem to offend me as much as some people. Vitale can be annoying if you're predisposed to feeling that way. His tangents... They all (sorta) make sense if you're listening all the way through, but if you drop in and out of listening/viewing, you can easily wonder What.

Battle was Howard or vice versa multiple times. He admonished Battle for taking a "bad shot" and went off on a bad shot rant when Battle was just trying to beat the shot clock. He's confused or barely paying attention at multiple points. He's had a hell of a run but he's a very tough listen at this point.

He also said "sexy" about a half dozen times.

I've never been a Dick Vitale fan. Thought his blithering shtick was tiresome in the 80s / 90s, but recognize that he's become an institution to many. Was happy [quietly] a few years ago, when he began scaling down his broadcasts.

All that said -- I don't disagree with anything complained about above. But this week -- with the Jimmy V Foundation ties -- it really made sense for Dick Vitale to be on the mike. At this point, he's an old man who rambles even more and is somehow less coherent even than he used to be. But it was for a good cause, and it is a limited thing, so you have to put up with the bad and just hold your nose and recognize why he was one of the color commentators.

He messed up a lot of guys names and sounded confused too many times. I think it's time for Mr. Vitale to stop calling games...

You need to listen closer. That’s not what Shulman was saying at all regarding Marek’s recruitment. I do agree though that Vitale goes off on way too many tangents during most broadcasts and talks about other college basketball news and too many other CBB teams, instead of commenting on the game in front of him. He’s gotten worse and worse at that in his old age. ...Shulman is aces, but gets distracted by Vitale’s tangents.

Yeah the announcers don't bother me and I don't know how I feel about the camera angles. Having the only sound be the ambient noise was kind of cool though.

I like Shulman more than I used to. He is one of the better play by play guys. He is no Sean McDonough but I would be hard pressed to name a hand full of people who would do college games that are better. It is just Vitale that makes it bad. It makes sense for him to do this game but he is just too old I think and can't follow the flow of the game well with player names and such. I think Shulman and Bilas are amazing together. As a Syracuse fan I will give Vitale credit for talking about Pearl and what an amazing player he was and mentioning seeing Melo play his first game against Memphis which was almost 15 years ago. He talked about Bazely, Carey and Buddy as well so it's not as if he doesn't know anything about the program.
