Race for the Top Seed

Notre Dame, with its win against Syracuse, improved to 2-0 in the ACC and now has a top five win. With the No. 1 RPI and No. 1 Opponent Winning Percentage, the Irish certainly appear to be the frontrunner for the top seed in the NCAA Tournament.

Despite the loss to Notre Dame, Syracuse will be in the conversation for a top seed over the next five weeks. Playing in the ACC, which has the top RPI in the country, Syracuse has a chance to pick up a top 10 win almost every time it steps on the field. Syracuse is one of three teams with four top 20 wins right now.

I'd take this in a heart beat. Maryland, Duke, UNC and Notre Dame all in the other half of the draw.

Not a bad draw for sure but I would rather avoid a Cornell/Albany rematch if at all possible.

As long as we're playing the quarters "In The Annapolis" and not "In The Denver".

Extreme need your technical knowledge again, how does the NCAA breakdown who goes to Denver and who goes to Annapolis? I know its technically done by what side of the bracket you are on so in theory aren't they simply going to put Denver on the other side of the bracket so there not playing a home game?

In 2008 Cornell was an 8 seed and positioned for a home game in the quarters, but they got upset by Ohio State.

(1)Duke v Ohio State and (3) Syracuse v Notre Dame were the two quarterfinal games at Schoellkopf, even through we were on opposite sides of the bracket. It's like the POD system for basketball.

If Denver is a Top 8 Seed and advances, I expect that they will end up with two "home" games, even though the quarters are at Mile High. Otherwise, who would buy tickets and travel out there?

IMO, it would make sense to have Notre Dame in the other quarterfinal game out West. South Bend is closer to Denver than Syracuse is. Someone has to play out there.

But since when does the NCAA do anything that makes sense. Hope that SU and Denver both finish in the Top 4, and we won't see each other until Philly (or SU finishes 1-2 and Denver finishes anywhere but 7-8).

Thanks great explanation. Man if your Maryland or ND or SU or UNC (basically a top 4 seed) and your stuck playing Denver in Denver theres going to be a massive outcry.

This tourney has never been particularly concerned with fairness. Seeds are arranged to save travel money. Regional match ups are common. Denver at home is also a revenue creator for the tourney.

Think the selection committee will avoid making Denver a 8 seed. If Denver's seed drops to around 8 or so, they would either make them a 10 or a 7 seed in order to "save" the #1 seed (Cuse, MD, or UNC) from making a long road trip across 2 time zones to Denver. Notre Dame might be the possible exception here. Given Denver's remaining schedule think its a long shot that they would drop below a 6 seed.
