Branding ... apparel sales

For a school that's being counted on to deliver the NY market, I honestly see more Hartford Whalers gear being worn in CT than I see Rutgers gear in NYC.

And I mean A LOT more.

Retro is cool man, I remember Cuse gear on all the hip hop guys from the 90's

that's because the whalers have the best logo over

And the past year was a rough one for SU's brand what with the Bernie Fine fiasco and all. I'm not sure when those figures were gathered, but if it includes the past year I would expect SU to be a little higher. If the numbers do not reflect the past year, then I would expect the figures to be accurate because the brand will most likely bounce right back to that pre-Bernie level or higher now that SU is going to the ACC.

I think you missed that the list has Maryland at #43.

Cheers,
Neil

You know - I looked three times and didn't see them. Good pick-up.

These rankings represent royalties reported July 1, 2011 through June 30, 2012 on all collegiate merchandise sold on behalf of CLC-represented institutions.

I live in long island and go to nyc alot and I barely ever see a Rutgers anything...logo, hat, jersey, t-shirt. I literally dont know where their supposed fanbase is hiding. My brother lives in Hoboken, i never see RU gear there either. Contrast that with the guarantee you will see Cuse apparel in NYC on gamedays. On gamedays at my restaurant in Nassau County i see tons of Cuse gear. I actually have about 10-12 customers who i talk to about Cuse on a regular basis. Im around the tri-state area alot and finding someone reppin RU brand is almost as likely as finding someone reppin Oregon State.

Many ways to assess the brand value of a school. Apparel sales would seem to be as good a way as any other. SU at #31 - not bad at all for a private school with limited alumni.

Selected schools:

SU - 31
Louisville - 32
UConn - 48
Rutgers - 54
Maryland - outside top 75 43

Syracuse has had a phenomenal brand tripped up a lot by crappy football and the Bernie Fine situation. But with LAX growing, the hoops team strutting swagger the past few years and the Newhouse alum, NYC is much more receptive to embracing the Orange.

That said, a number of pro teams trump the hell out of Cuse. College is to NYC as LA is to wanting a pro football team. Nada. But, there is no larger DMA.
