First of all an athletic director has very little to do with institutional alignment as it pertains to an athletic conference. He can give input but at the end of the day it is not his call. If anything an AD like Gross would pick the Big Ten over ACC despite the ACC long being the best athletic fit. As a townie I am already on record as saying I refused to attend ANY games this season as a result of the USC decision and I am not the only one. To say it had or should have had no inpact would be incorrect. Unfortunately in a town lacking the backbone to ever question the decisons on the hill this is the only way many of us have to show our disapproval. The University has shown time and time again, "Get a life" or "Only Game in Town" they do not care and it is unfortunate as the lack of trust between the local fans and University creates a relationship that is only strong during the good times. It is as easy for Gross to move games from CNY as it is for CNY to attend Beer Festivals or the State Fair during games. Why many of us obsess over the USC game is because we as local Syracuse residents struggling financially will most likely never have the opportunity to see one of the very best historic football programs on our home turf. It was a slap in the face and if you have any real clue on how this all works the excuses for moving the game simply do not pass the smell test. They help round up the sheep but those with independent thought understand that it was done simply due to the ego of an AD that wishes Syracuse University was located closer to the deep pocket donors and overall lifestyle of NYC. Gross is a solid modern AD whose accomplishments only look decent due to the complete incompetence of the past Chancellor and AD. I have a very, very, very hard time believing we have to move games to NYC or out of the Dome to compete at the highest levels. Boise State does it with blue turf in front of a stadium that holds 10,000 less fans than show up to our games in our worst years. They are in Idaho hundreds of miles away from high profile cities. Syracuse is in the heart of NY, playing in the dome, a bus ride from NYC, Albany, Toronto, Philly, Boston, etc. If Gross cannot build a winner centered out of the Carrier Dome then we need to find someone who can, period. James Arthur Boeheim does not need NYC because he knows who the best fans in college basketball are and we have proven in since 1980. Nobody draws as well as the CNY fan in lacrosse. CNY fans are not the issue and neither is the dome.
