Brandon Reddish Out for Minnesota Game

The PS article says Whigham has played on STs. Anyone know definitively if we've burned his shirt? I know Morgan's has been burned but thought we were saving Whigham.

We gotta get over the hwole redshirt thing. This program is not in the position to stockpile and develop as ideally as it should. People need to play now because we need to win now.

Then when we start to win, better recruits, we're solidly at the 85 number and - walaa - we can redshirt and greyshirt galore.

Burned?

That's the last thing anyone should worry about. If you need a kid to play, play them.

Holy crap - asking whether or not the kid's chance at a redshirt his first year is NOT an indictment of the staff's decision making! Lighten up, Francises!!

That would be: "voilà"

Eh?

Not a shred of sentiment about indicting or protecting the coaches, bud. More of a state of the reality in my opinion...

Agreed. You play your best available players, regardless of year. Some guys will develop faster by playing, while others are better served by hanging out in the program for a year and developing more physically and/or mentally. If a true freshman is ready to play and contribute, you play him. Redshirting is not always the best path for a player.

I, for one, don't want to see a year where we redshirt every freshman because that probably means we're not getting enough dynamic players right out of HS.

Ok, guess I wasn't expecting being told I shouldn't worry about redshirting players when asking if the chance of a redshirt year is gone due to participation.

Soooooooo...how did you take that as an indictment of the coaches?

Or do you go on Internet forums so people can just agree with you and say "You're awesome!"? That's cool...

You're entering a grey area with that statement. It is a delicate balance to make these moves/decisions and SU is getting closer to having kids that are not quite ready yet to sit but yeah, depth and injuries make those choices for them. I'd love to see SU have squads that just start true freshman, get significant playing time or they sit but I don't know if we'll ever see those days again.

As always, I would think the ultimate decision comes down to 1) a kid-by-kid basis, and 2) areas of need/little depth. But redshirting just to redshirt isn't the norm anywhere today. A lot of the top schools play guys right away (TCU is playing 12, Florida at least 9, etc.)

I didn't; perhaps I misunderstood your (and Go's) reply to my question as defending the staff's decisions regarding player participation.

Agreed, but play them enough to make it worthwhile.

I wholeheartedly agree and those days are in the rear view mirror because of the lack of schollys given, it ain't like the old days. It's the tweeners that I hope can get that extra year and to also not have them on just specials unless they are kicking, snapping or returning.

Yes, Whigham played against USC and Stony Brook, per suathletics.com.

Wasn't he back returning punts after Rene went out last week? ESPN gamecast said as much but is tragically wrong at points.

I have to admit I feel a lot more comfortable having the subs we do now over the past x amount of years when an injury to a player like this happens. No more 5'6" 130 lb walk ons (hyperbole alert) to take Reddish's place, instead we have guys ready to step up and show they too deserve some pt.

I liked the way Desir cut and moved when he caught the ball and to be honest, I liked how Rene looked on his return as well...not the out of bounds thingie but his run back.

Desir did look good on punts.

Rene looked good on his one return; Morgan threw a nice block to help out. Wayne Morgan should be on the field as often as possible. He plays hard. (And to think, it's only a year ago that I was clicking on "Wayne Morgan" threads wondering what the assistant basketball coach who brought us such talents as Todd Burgan and Charles Gelatt had to do with our football recruiting.)
