Former champions have been assigned the top two seeds in the National Division of the Mirabito STOP-DWI Holiday Classic basketball tournament, to be held Dec. 28-30 at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena.

Or, perhaps label that the “International Division,” as a pair of Canadian entrants will participate. Bill Crothers Secondary School (Unionville, Ont.) and Thornlea Secondary School (Thornhill, Ont.) will be joined by three New York City programs and one each from Pennsylvania, Virginia and Kentucky in the eight-team division, which for the second time in 21 years will have no local school.

“That’s our decision, to make the tournament more competitive,” said Chris Marion, Broome County STOP-DWI coordinator and first-time tournament director. “Going forward, part of our partnership with Mirabito is about increasing the level of competition in the National Division.”

Two four-team regional divisions will be made up exclusively of Southern Tier Athletic Conference members — with former National Division mainstay Binghamton and Maine-Endwell seeded Nos. 1 and 2, respectively, in Regional Division I.

St. Raymond High of the Bronx, tournament champion in 1998 and 2004, 1996 champ Bishop Loughlin Memorial High of Brooklyn, and Brooklyn Collegiate High will each make a bid to make it 11 New York City champions in 21 years of the Holiday Classic.

St. Raymond is coming off a 21-9, Catholic High School Athletic Association championship season that concluded with the team ranked fifth among the state’s Class AA programs. Brooklyn Collegiate was 25-6 as the fifth-ranked Class A team. Collegiate lost to Long Island Lutheran in the Federation semifinal last March in Albany.

The National Division will also include I.C. Norcom High of Portsmouth, Va., runner-up in the 2007 Holiday Classic, as well as Paul Laurence Dunbar High of Lexington, Ky., which last spring appointed Scott Chalk as its coach. Winner of 300-plus games, Chalk previously coached two other Kentucky squads in the STOP-DWI Holiday Classic, Franklin County and Frankford.

Philadelphia Electric and Technology Charter High School will look to become the third consecutive tournament champion from that city. Imhotep Charter School took the 2010 title with a 22-point win in the final, and last December SS Neumann Goretti was a 32-point winner over Queens Christ The King in the final.

Perhaps most interesting of potential matchups on the Regional front would be one that could pit Binghamton against Maine-Endwell for the Division I title. The Patriots would first have to get past Union-Endicott, and M-E would need to defeat Norwich.

The three-day tournament will be preceded by Three-Point and Dunk contests Dec. 27 at Binghamton High School.

Great tournament. Great cause. Regional Division 1 is loaded, if it's Binghamton, M-E, U-E and Norwich. Binghamton and Norwich are perennial Section 4 powers, U-E is building a solid program, and M-E has been a force for several years now. Should be worth watching.
