There must be a school out there, some sort of Hogwarts-inspired academy where columnists go to learn the art of lousy column writing. It can't just be a coincidence that our worst sports columnists, people such as Woody Paige, Jay Mariotti and this week's featured guest, Bud Poliquin, are all seemingly cut from the same cloth — overly negative in approach, painfully flowery in execution. Ten words where two will do. It takes them seemingly forever to get to the point, going on and on when the paragraph should have been ended sentences ago, droning on about ... dang! Now we're doing it! On to the vital statistics.

Name: Bud Poliquin.
Born: Chicago, Ill.
Columnist: Syracuse Post-Standard.
Nicknames: The Old Man, The Big Wind.
Most often heard on: WHEN 620-AM "Bud and the Manchild".
Best description of his writing style in a blog: "A talentless hack ... an inept asshat who should have been fired years ago." [Something's Gone Wrong Again]
Most resembles: Johnny "Sack" Sacramoni (Vince Curatola) from "The Sopranos."
Disturbing rumor: Often wears the Orangeman mascot head while mingling with fans in the Carrier Dome to hear what they might be saying about him.

There's no law that says a small-town columnist can't suck ... Poliquin proves that. In fact, we're puzzled as to why he hasn't hit the big time. How could ESPN not gobble him up with column leads such as the following, on Jacqui Frazier-Lyde:

"She should have been Ali's kid. She has the smile, the mirth, the ability to light up a room like a heavy chandelier. And talk? Joe Frazier's daughter can talk, all right. Like a chatty barber, she can talk. Give her a piece of string, and she'll give you 20 minutes on it."

A heavy chandelier? And why string, of all things? You read something like this and you know there's going to be trouble later. Others have deconstructed Mr. Poliquin more completely, however. We found this on a message board:

"I looked at Bud's column from Monday and ran it through the Flesch-Kincaid readability statistics. As much as he tries to use the big words and keep us interested, his readability grade level is a 7.6 (seems high to me) and his Reading Ease is 67.2. Back to school, Bud."

Can we get the poop emoticon and use it instead of bud's name?

they dont make short bus's for the regular kids -

I have nothing against Bud. I'm sure is he is a good person, but his writing style totally distracts me from what he is trying to say.

Yes there have been many times that he tries to get so cute that I have no idea what he's talking about.

Bud is the worst, and has been for a long time. I haven't lived in CNY since 1999, but prior to then I avidly read the local paper for years and disliked Bud's style from the first time I read one of his columns. I used to wonder why he was given such latitude to editorialize, given how generally poor of a writer he seems to be. I get it--these syndicated columnists love to have stylistic schtick, but I have yet to encounter anyone--and I mean literally ANYONE--who connects with his style or enjoys his articles. His columns have always been a waste of print space, and certainly don't belong on a sports page.

My father still lives in Syracuse, and when I'm back in town for holidays, the occasional SU game, and such I've had the misfortune of hearing Bud's radio show. You know how they say that unattractive people have a face for radio? Well, Bud sure doesn't have a voice for radio. Talk about annoying. And sadly, I'm not sure who is worse--Bud or that clown he used to co-host with. Combined, they were a collossal waste of airwave bandwidth.

I'm really not sure how he's carved out the career he has. Given that the PS lost some quality journalists when they had the layoffs a couple of years ago, it really is a shame that Bud retained his job while many other more talented writers were shown the door. I can't think of any value for his articles, beyond lining the bottom of a bird cage. IMO, he's that bad / worthless.

Maybe I just wasn't paying attention before but I find his columns to be more negative and biased than they used to be. It is very clear now he absolutely loathes football and loves baseball. He despises SU Athletics and the coaching staffs. Seems like he is making it more clear lately IMO.

Is he required to use, "whiz bang" in every article per contractual obligations with Syracuse.com? I mean if this is a running joke then he's the only one still laughing.

He can be a little silly and repetitive with his writing ("roarers", "the joint" being two of his terms used in virtually every piece), but I'm a little suprised by vitriol. Does he come to your house and pee in your cheerios every morning?

Pointing out that somebody is poor at what they do isn't "vitriol."

His style is annoying - but that article was ill-timed and click bait writing at its worst. I know the local writers aren't supposed to be fans (even if Axe writes and behaves like a guy on the Crunch payroll) - but you gotta know when there is real momentum for the football program and when to ride the wave rather than poop in the Cheerios. Totally behind the times and tone-deaf to boot.

I didn't realize it was a commentary on a specific column. Hadn't read anything from him in a while. That helps understand it a little.

Maybe not, but this seems to be going a little past constructive criticism!

If you like Poloquin's literary style, that's perfectly fine by me. It's a free country, and everyone is entitled to read / prefer whoever you want. Just as others are free to critique writers they don't like.

What's next--a spirited push back on someone not liking a baseball / football / basketball team you happen to root for? ;) It's a pointless thing to rail against.

Uh oh, I am going to get labelled!! Yikes.

I remember reading his columns as a child thinking I'd understand him when I get older. I'm 40 now, clearly Bud and Dennis Miller are over my head.

The Bud is in his own private Idaho. He is truly special

Well, Bud's a UConn grad . . . . so . . . . yeah . . . . .

That might be a good thing...whiz bang

And he has his own car service:

I used to dislike Bud because of his writing but when I started listening to his show I grew to like him personally. But he still occasionally takes a position that irks me.

His latest is that the guy who injured Kevin Love didn't deserve any more than his one game suspension because it was just "rough play" and "you see plays like that in every game".
