It's hard out here for an independent school.

With the College Football Playoff beginning this season the divide between the haves and have-nots of the college football world is only going to grow larger, and BYU is one of the schools that will suffer from it. With a selection committee deciding which four teams will compete in the playoff, schools in the Power 5 conferences all realize that strength of schedule is going to matter quite a bit, and have taken measures to make sure their schedules are
up to snuff. The ACC and SEC, eschewing the nine-game conference schedules that the Big 12 and Pac-12 play, and the Big Ten will begin playing, have decided to make sure they play at least one non-conference game against a Power 5 school each season.

And BYU wants to be one of those schools, but it appears it isn't going to get its wish...

People here in Utah are freaking out about it. It's a fairly delusional fan base - they talk every year about going undefeated and competing for the national championship. It's bizarre. But, they do support their team really, really well.

Never been out there myself but my oldest brother has gone out there twice and said exactly what you just shared. They are absolutely delusional.

It's not much better for the Utes fans. They love being in the PAC-12, but are terrified that they're in over their heads.

It is kind of amazing though that a relatively small state supports three decent football programs in BYU, the University of Utah, and Utah State. Sports are taken pretty seriously here, but it still blows my mind that in comparison New York for all of its size seems unable to sustain Syracuse on its own.

If Syracuse was a state school flagship and called New York St. Univ...it would be different.

The stance of the P-5 conferences in this regard is a weak. The only reason for taking this stance is to try to exclude one more school from playing on a (somewhat) level playing field.

If/when the Little XII is forced to expand, they would appear to be a likely candidate (along with Cincy). With two other private schools now in the fold they may have a better chance than they had in prior years. I gather that "no Sunday games" and "showing game re-runs on BYU TV" are the two major hurdles to address, with the latter being less of an issue for non-conference games.

I think excluding byu is simple half there schedule is terrible and don't want to hurt sos

Understand that BYU's arrogant stance to go independent and comparing themselves to Notre Dame without the history or the Scheduling ruffled a lot of feathers and garnered them a lot of ill will. As a result, there aren't many teams out there that want to do them favors now.

This is precisely what I'm talking about Billsin01. Strength of schedule is a key component to a playoff and a national championship so a bunch of kill games against bad teams that don't have a chance are not desired in the P5.

Rutgers of the west with a couple of remarkable seasons?

What's sad is that in the next few years you might more schools dropping football like what Hawaii is threatening to do. Slive is probably dancing a jig over this as then the big networks have more money to give the big 5 do to the lack of competition in some local markets. The power 5 leaders want all the money for themselves.

What's next a NCAA B.B. tournament for only the power 5 teams that controls the T.V. markets and everyone else is left standing on a street corner looking for donations.

I can see that this could very easily end up in the courts as too many schools receive public funding for them to get away with this.

If BYU wants to play in the Dome, fine (I think we had a 42-7 halftime lead the last time that happened).

But never, ever, never, ever, never play in Provo again. If we have to do a road game, make it neutral site in Kansas City. Great BBQ.

Could maybe get a 2H, 1A, 1N with them.

They just signed and home and home with Washington. announced it today

With Washington now on the schedule, BYU has 22 future games scheduled with nine different teams from the Pac-12 Conference from 2014 through 2025.

And they are kicking off the season with a ESPN Friday game next weeek.

Since a non-P5 team just won the NCAA title for both men's and women's hoops, I doubt that any such split would be forthcoming.

And the NCAA has had a long time to address the issue of the football powerhouses/power conferences, to reduce the concentration of power in a few oligarchs - reduce the scholarship limit. As long as you let the factories "hoard" players, they will call the shots.

You'd have to eliminate redshirting. Everybody plays, nobody sits.

Then you might be able to cut down to 75.

Notre Dame will play BYU home and home and they wouldn't play Syracuse home/home.
All the ACC/SEC did to BYU was end their independence they will join either the Mountain West(most likely), American Athletic(they pray BYU will join) or the Big XII(BYU wants in here BADLY but the B12 isn't ready to expand)

That is a possibility, certainly. You'd also have to cross-train players more, I think.

But if you limit guys to playing only on offense or defense (no Diamond Ferris, not a return to single platoon or whatever it was called), and have 3 different guys at every position, that's 66. Add a couple kickers, call it 70.

No offense to the Utah residents on the board, I just hope we avoid them. Playing them away is a nightmare for an east coast team. If we do it, we'll need 2 straight bye weeks after.

Years ago Marrone told me that he wouldn't want to travel to BYU because it's not an area we actively recruit.

BYU if they didn't stick to their religious guns(no playing on Sunday and I don't blame them because its personal) they would be an obvious target for the PAC-12.
However, the PAC-12 is holding out hope for Texas/Oklahoma/Oklahoma State/Texas Tech package eventually heading out west and being in a division with Utah, Colorado, Arizona, Arizona State.
