BYU could conceivably go undefeated. They're in control against Houston right now, and here's the rest of the schedule:

Virginia
Utah State
@UCF
Nevada
@Boise
@Middle Tenn St
UNLV
Savannah St
@Cal

I'm interested to see how the committee would evaluate a 12-0 BYU team that dominated its schedule. Could they sneak into the playoff?

They're in a great position right now and have a big time QB. There are 5 power conferences. The Big10 is in a poor position right now. The ACC really only has FSU. The Pac 12 has oregon and USC, and the Big 12 is still pretty open.

The big question is how many teams end up undefeated and how many SEC teams are undefeated or have 1 loss. I personally like their chances as they're making noise early in the season and aren't a team that is slowly rising and gains attention late. It's week 3 and people are paying attention. If they're are 1 or 2 undefeated teams from P5 (or less), I have to like their chances.

I agree 100%. Just playing devils advocate, but aren't there a bunch of undefeated teams left in a bunch of power 5 conferences? Aren't they all still alive for the playoff?

Ranking means nothing.

I think it helps that they have a legit star at QB. They'll need some buzz, he can give them that.

Strength of Schedule is going to rule them out, even if they go undefeated, they will have beaten no-one, they will get one of the other type of bowls outside the playoffs.

UCF or Cal will pop BYU. If they went 12-0 they would be a playoff team IMO. Assuming their weren't four other undefeated teams. BYU is legit surprised the Utes of Utah aren't on their schedule.

Sorry , no playoff for the Cougs , even undefeated . Gotta be in the P5.

A reason why the big schools need to break away.

On the other hand, there are already very few undefeated teams in the non-P5 conferences:
AAC - only Cinci, who hasn't played at all yet - has Ohio St. and Miami on schedule;
CUSA - only Marshall (no P5 on schedule);
MAC - Northern Illinois (already beat Northwestern and plays Arkansas later on) & CMU (hopefully that ends this week - besides us, beat Purdue and also plays Kansas);
MWC - Nevada (beat Wazoo, also plays Arizona and BYU) & Wyoming (will drop out after playing Oregon this week, also plays Mich. St.);
Sun Belt - there are a few but who cares?

Cinci and Nothern Illinois have the recent history to get consideration if they win out.

Also - imagine the fun if both Notre Dame and BYU run the table?

That BYU QB is quick. I really don't want to play them.

can't imagine they'd get in. not their fault that texas stinks but if you're not power 5 and want a real shot you'd better schedule multiple powerhouses. they wouldn't get in over a one-loss power team.

This is a pretty weak schedule for them. 2015 is a lot stronger - first four games are Nebraska, Boise St., UCLA and Michigan.

that's exactly what they need to do to make a case. it makes their schedule comparable to the power leagues. good for them scheduling that way. given the lag between when the tourney was announced and how quickly schedules some together, that's likely the fastest they could get those types of opponents together.

There is no way I think they should get in the playoff with that schedule. I don't know if they would.

I think they have a decent squad... but does anyone think they would be over .500 in the SEC.

It would be a disservice to the rest of the country... the playoff should be the best 4 teams. I think a 1 loss team from SEC (for sure), Pac 12, AND ACC should get in before BYU.

If they had a couple ranked teams on the schedule that'd be different... just my opinion.

The 4 team playoff should be the 4 conference champions from the p5 which are the 4 highest ranked conferences.

if the sec has an undefeated and a one loss team (and maybe same if oregon/usc in pac), i'd be a-ok with a non-undefeated b-12 team not making it even if they're champs of the conference.

Sure , they need to have a conference title game or they will get that treatment.

I think Oregon has the most upside of the pac 12 teams. they will also lose to Stanford and not even play in the pac 12 title game, stanford will win that side and lose in the pac 12 game, so there will no undefeated teams in the pac12 or b10 or sec. maybe OK and maybe FSU, but no way BYU can get over the dozen or so 1-2 loss teams from the p-5 when the toughest game will be a 3-4 loss Cal/UCF

It wont be surprising if only 1-2 teams end up undefeated.

Something unexpected always happens, but Oklahoma (Baylor at home) and FSU (Clemson, ND, Gators at home) have the easiest roads.

That SEC West is going to be a grind. They're going to eat their own by season's end. Can't imagine anyone gets through that without a loss. Georgia probably has the best chance if they survive this weekend's trip to Columbia. Seems hard to believe that Tennessee and Florida are all the way back yet. But then they'd probably be an underdog in the SEC title game.
