Syracuse, N.Y. -- Rod Oden first got wind that Tyrone Sampson was wavering on his commitment to Syracuse football about a week ago. Sampson, Oden's standout center at East English Village (Detroit) Prep, was beginning to believe he had missed out on the recruiting process. He committed to the Orange in April and heavily narrowed his focus to one school, visiting Central New York about half a dozen times through the year. On Wednesday, the first day of the inaugural early signing period, Sampson sat down again with Oden at 10 a.m. Then he announced his decommitment from SU. "In my conversation with him (on Wednesday), he just spoke about the fact that he committed so early," Oden said. "He didn't get to see a lot of the other schools and see what they had to offer." The 6-foot-3, 295-pound Sampson was Syracuse's lone four-star prospect this cycle, per 247Sports.com's composite rankings (tackle Qadir White was recently bumped to three stars). He's rated the No. 7 center in the Class of 2018, represented the Orange at The Opening -- the most prestigious high school camp -- and accepted an invitation to the U.S. Army All-American Game. Oden said Sampson could have stuck with his decision to enroll early, Oden said, but that would have required a last-minute series of visits and a rushed decision. Indiana and Cincinnati are the Power-5 schools to have visited East English Village Prep regarding Sampson recently, Oden said, and there is an allure to play a bit closer. In-state powers Michigan and Michigan State are not involved, Oden said. "When it came down to the wire with Friday being the dead period for recruiting, he didn't want to visit a school over the weekend, commit to a school and then enroll the next weekend," Oden said. Instead, Sampson will enjoy the second semester of his senior year, sign in February and enroll in college this summer. And the Orange may not be completely out of the picture, Oden said. "My understanding is he still loves Syracuse. I'm pretty sure they'll still be in consideration."
