It drives me nuts when it's 3rd and long and we only put 3 men on the line, but it seemed like we actually got enough pressure that way to force bad passes and even get a sack or two.

Was that a function of opponent or do we really think that can hold up through the season?

Imo, function of the opponent. Especially as the game went on and their OL got worn down.

We've seen Ward go to it. Never seen it work that well though.

I am "very rarely" a believer of a three man front, either for the Juice or my NFL team. It drives me nuts when we do this and the offense converts a third and 17 because the QB had so much time. I was not able to watch the Liberty game, but from all the comments on here it appears our secondary is stellar and maybe we won't see all these open receivers as has been the case in recent years. Glad I have TV for the Maryland game as I am anxious to do my own assessment of the entire team.

The strength of the secondary coupled with how the DL was manhandling Liberty makes it easy to go with a 3 man rush. I think we will see it a lot this year because we will have this same advantage in most games. Robinson, Black/Ruff and Coleman >> nearly all O lines we will face.
Edit: I should have also said that I normally hate a 3 man front as well on 3rd and forever. Get pressure and make the QB dump it off.

It’s less of a pressure package as much as it is a contain. It’s used to keep the QB in the pocket while Tyrell Richards plays the middle as a spy. Sacks are great but the point of it is to get the punt return on the following down

Could also be another case of mental games by Dino.
Let the Terps prepare for both the 3-man and 4-man fronts. ;)

I like 3 man fronts only when you can get pressure on the QB with it or if you switch guys to blitz as the 4th rusher...kind of nullifies the 3 man but if any one of X other guys blitz it makes the OL and QB think along with getting some pressure.

This seems like a post where you want to complain but can’t.

I don’t care if they rush two and it works. If it works, it works.

RJ Anderson in 2001 taught me this.

if you can rush and get pressure with 3 why not.. we didnt want to show blitz packages so we went with something else.

Converted 3 out of 16, 18% in the game - #19 nationally so far

#7 nationally in 2018
#13 nationally in 2017

We mix it up normally - but it’s a very consistent part of our defense. And whatever we’re doing - 3rd and med/long is a win for a Ward D

Not a worry

Simple...use it til it doesn’t work. This game is all about adjusting. The issue will be when they don’t adjust. Until then use it if it works.

Agreed, The strongest part of our defense is the performance of the third down unit. It is not an area for concern.
