It has happened 3 times against Syracuse involving a QB.

Every single time to the benefit of our opponent.
1. First time at LSU. Dungey take off his helmet and the refs make him come off. Syracuse calls a TO but still the refs make Dungey sit out critical play on 3rd down.

2. Second time versus Pitt. The Pitt QB loses his helmet. Pitt calls a TO and the QB doesn’t miss a critical 3rd down.

3. Third time versus Clemson. On a critical 3rd down Dungey gets up slowly. The refs insist he must miss a play even though the trainers didn’t come out. Syracuse calls a TO and the refs insist he still miss that 3rd down play.

What the heck is the rule.

Screw SU Rule?

I do think the refs have some new power/authority to remove a player they fear has been affected about the head

This is the part that bothered me. He was never officially injured on the play. Didn’t request trainers, just had some pain. Are the refs now allowed to make injury diagnosis after plays now? My god, nobody will ever play as every player is is some pain almost every play.

HELMETS—The helmet is intended to protect the player from head injuries. It must therefore be fitted properly so that it does not come off through play. Coaches and trainers must be diligent in seeing that players wear the helmets properly, and officials must firmly enforce the rules requiring chin straps to be tightly secured. The rules (Rule 3-3-9) now call for the player whose helmet comes off to leave the game for one down, unless this is the direct result of a foul. The player may remain in the game if his team is granted a charged timeout.

Injury Timeout

ARTICLE 5. a. In the event of an injured player(s):
1. An official will declare a timeout and the player(s) must leave the

game. He must remain out of the game for at least one down. When

in question, officials will take a timeout for an injured player.

  1. The player(s) may not return to the game until he receives approval

of professional medical personnel designated by his institution.

  2. Medical personnel shall give special attention to players who exhibit

signs of a concussion. (See Appendix C).

  3. Whenever a participant (player or game official) is bleeding, has blood

saturated on the uniform, or has blood on exposed skin, the player or game official shall go to the team area and be given appropriate medical treatment. He may not return to the game without approval of medical personnel (A.R. 3-3-5-I-VII).
  1. To curtail a possible time-gaining advantage by feigning injuries, attention is directed to the strongly worded statement in The Football Code (Coaching Ethics, Section h).

  2. An injury timeout may follow a charged team timeout.

  3. The referee will declare a timeout for an injured official.

  4. Following a timeout for an injured player of the defensive team, the play

clock shall be set at 40 seconds.

So to answer ALSACS question, why are there different results?

Am I the refs from those games?

I think the helmet rule against LSU was botched... Injury that can be enforced timeout or not.

Sorry if that came out blunt...just curious on your thoughts as you are a football coach.

I'm sorry if I did as well... wasn't the intent.

Complete honesty, I see misinterpretations and subjective calls ever weekend. The lack of consistency is maddening as a coach.

But I'm almost positive in prior seasons I've seen injured players dodge the sit out with a time out.

I was livid during the game about it... but after reading the rules this morning I believe it is enforceable.

Wonderingly the same but I think the explanation is that at LSU it was a referee error, against Pitt it was properly applied. Against Clemson it was a bit different - perceived injury vs. lost helmet. After the charged timeout and discussion the Syracuse timeout WAS restored I think. Assume we could have then used our final timeout and Dungey could have returned.

This is correct. They changed the call from a timeout to an injury timeout, restoring the TO we had used.

So that said, could HCDB have called a TO and put Dungey in? Or, the refs thought ED had to be looked at so they gave back the TO and Mahoney had to come in?

I really have been trying to find out if we could have called a to and then put him back in.. if the rules say no then that may be why we didnt try that route.

The latter. I think Dino/SU tried to call the TO so he could come in but refs said it was an injury TO and it was given back, but Dungey had to sit.

LSU play was absolutely wrong.

I think so but it would have been our final timeout and we were looking at a 3rd and very short so it made sense to have Zach execute the handoff before Eric came back in. At least that is how I remembered it...

The big issue was that with Dungey run/throw options were on the table.. Without him I dont think they really even wanted to hand it off.

It happened in TCU/KSU game yesterday. Qb had his lid ripped off at bottom of pile. No penalty called. He explained to one ref and they went to head guy and he had to sit because no penalty.

He couldnt come back on because he wasnt being held out due to his helmet coming off. The refs gave us an injury timeout... thats why we ended up getting our timeout back.

I know they can pop off but the ripped off helmet seems to benefit the D big time thus I don't understand how that isn't a penalty in the first place. I've seen this happen multiple times and not be called.

True but HCDB wanted Dungey in the game so that was the refs call to not let him in because again, Babers did not want to take him out and that part seems to be the confusing aspect of this.
