I have to comment on the CBS Sports Midseason Awards and Predictions article that OrangeEyes posted today (as he commented, zero respect for the Cuse). For the most part, I like the different articles and opinions that the guys at CBS put out. By know means am I expert or anything, I just enjoy reading opinion and analysis (I tend to just read here, but not post), but some of the points in this article kinda make them look silly.

Here are a few things that jump out at me:
  • Goodman comments in one section that Indiana is overated, but then in the following section he claims Tom Creen is the coach of the year. What? If Creen is doing such a great job, shouldn't you then suspect that his team is doing well and they should be moving up the rankings? They're ranked 12th I believe, considering their record, who they have beat, one could argue they're not ranked high enough. But to say they are overated based on what they have done at this point in the season, I don't get it.
  • Parrish includes the Cuse in his overated list. No problem, but then why do you have them ranked #1 in your own poll? I mean, here is a guy who rips people each week in his weekly "poll attacks", but yet he is claiming that the team he ranks as #1 is overated. That seems like grounds for our own version of poll attacks toward Parrish. OK, so if they were ranked #4 or #5 are they still overated? They really isn't any difference between #1 and #5. So if he is suggesting that Cuse should be ranked 20th, that's laughable.
  • Also, again this isn't b/c I'm a Cuse fan, or that I think Syracuse is a lock for the FF4, they're not, but the fact that not one of their 4 writers has Cuse in their FF4 predictions seem kinda out of touch to me. To put it another way, the title of the article is Mid Season Awards and Predictions, so considering that, at this point in the season, how can they honestly not think that the Cuse has a legit shot at the FF4, but Florida does or Uconn does? If a team at the Mid Season who is 16-0, with a #1 ranking, 4 of 5 returning starters and with the leading bench scoring team in the nation can't get 1 FF4 vote from one of their writers, it kinda makes me roll my eyes.
At the end of the day, it doesn't matter. Put up or shut up on the court. One thing is for certain however, this article and some of the reader comments attached to it definitely get me fired up and hope that this team to continues to roll!

As a side note, I hope they put up 100 pts on Saturday so I can go to McD's and ask for free fries a la the 80's :).

I could give a rats ass what he or any other analyst says...good or bad. I never take these columns seriously and it's all just as jb says talk show talk. The fact is we are 16-0 and #1 in the country and on the fast track to a top seed in the NCAA tournament.

I will take my chances once get in the tournament with this scenario.

Meh ... Its settled on the court. Not in columns. We shall see what we shall see.

Right now, this team would rip the roof off any non-conference contender for the Title. It doesn't take a genius to understand what is happening right now...

DESTINY is unfolding before our very eyes...

Oh no ... don't start the destiny thing ... oh,never mind that was Dynasty

in a word: coaching

like it or not, JB has a reputation of being the best coach in the nation - from early November to mid-January. Others, in particular Calhoun, has the rep of being great coaches in March. On the one hand, a neutral observer might look at Syracuse and think "they will peak too early and fade, they always do;" on the other hand, the same guy looks at the collection of raw talent that Calhoun has and, given his rep as a strong closer, and figures "a motivated Jim Calhoun coming off a suspension will really do something with this group."

I am not saying I agree with that, but I can certainly understand it.

in a better word: perception

Although I do understand and appreciate the point you are making.

It is amazing to me how SU can be #1, yet we can still feel disrespected. Does this motivate our players? I don't know. Last year we started 18-0, but we all knew that our team wasn't that good. This year is completely different, and I am astonished that these "experts" can't see it. Also, they may resist putting SU in the Final Four because it feels sexy for them to go with a team that isn't #1. Very perverse of them, and stupid, too. (Remember the year UNC was #1 throughout most of the year and then they won the tournament? What an accomplishment that was! I hope we can match it.)

All other analysis is now pointless:

Digger Phelps just declared that Jared Sullinger and Ohio State are on a MISSION during Gameday. Everyone else is done.

Jay Bilas, Hubert Davis and Digger both just predicted SU in the Final Four.

All other analysis is now pointless:

Digger Phelps just declared that Jared Sullinger and Ohio State are on a MISSION during Gameday. Everyone else is done.

Does that mean Sullinger is going to "GET IT DONE", maybe with "POINTS IN THE PAINT"?

Those may be the only 3 things Digger uses to analyze hoops.

Sullinger is a sold player and appears to be a great kid...but he is the single most over-rated player in the country. One of my sales reps who lives in Columbus and is an O$U alum agrees with me.

At 6'8", I think JS would have a difficult time with our size inside. To me, O$U most valuable player is Craft.

I also don't get why anyone gets worked up about what people have to say about stuff like this, for a variety of reasons. Besides, maybe they're right. If SU doesn;'t make the final four, is the OP going to come back on here and say i guess those guys were right? I'm guessing not.

Sully should have left last year. His stock will only go down from here.

I think Sullinger is a great college player, but I agree on his NBA stock; he seemed to be pretty well fully formed as a freshmen.

I don't see why he couldn't be, at worst, DaJuan Blair. That's not too shabby. He's got more skill than Blair, too. He will find a place in an NBA rotation.

It's a fair comparison. Blair put up very similar numbers, but didn't have quite the same range.

I would agree with the people that said he probably made a mistake staying, at least it looks like it at this point. Unless you're going to really show off an improved skill set (or dominate in a way you didn't the year before) all it does is make it look like you have less long-term upside if you stay. I've only seen a couple Ohio State games this year though, so maybe he is doing that...haven't noticed at all though in what I have seen of him.

I never suggested that they were wrong. Read my third point again. I'm not getting worked up, I just think they're off base with some of their predictions. Again, based on the title of the article, Mid Season Awards and Predictions, it seems odd to me that what we have seen from Cuse at the mid season, you would think one of the four basketball "experts" at CBS would think team is for real.

I will say that I think it's a little odd that JB, as far as I know, hasn't gotten any buzz for COTY. I realize we started the year as a top 5 team, but no me thought we would be this good. No one. Well, except possibly mantonio and his four thousand exclamation points.
