Maryland (2-1) at Syracuse (2-0) Sept. 20, 12:30, ACC Network Here's The Deal: For the first time since 1994, Syracuse is hosting Maryland, an old East Coast rival from as far back as the 1920’s. The Orange erupted out of its bye week with an impressive 40-3 drubbing of Central Michigan, which had beaten Purdue a week earlier. For Syracuse, it was a stark departure from its Week 1 overtime escape of Villanova. The Terps became the latest Big Ten team to drop a non-conference, falling at home to West Virginia in a heartbreaker. Now they head out on the road attempting to avoid taking a .500 mark into league play. Why Maryland Might Win: The Terps are diverse and dangerous on offense. QB C.J. Brown is a savvy scrambler, with a team-high 219 yards and four touchdowns on the ground. And although his accuracy as a passer is inconsistent, he has a pair of dynamite receivers, Deon Long and Stefon Diggs, to help broaden the catch-radius. Maryland will also be aided by the special teams heroics of Diggs and punt returning jackrabbit Will Likely. Why Syracuse Might Win: The Orange is playing better defensively than the Terps, tallying nine sacks in two games behind hard-charging LB Cameron Lynch. While Syracuse was stifling Central Michigan last Saturday, Maryland was being carved up by Clint Trickett and West Virginia. The Orange has its own multi-dimensional quarterback, Terrel Hunt, who rushed for three scores last week. Who To Watch Out For: The Maryland secondary is beatable, but does Syracuse possess the weapons to take advantage? Hunt hasn’t been getting the ball downfield, failing to complete a pass longer than 20 yards in the first two games. Someone, say upwardly-mobile rookie Steve Ishmael, needs to exploit the defense that defense that gave up 511 yards through the air last week. What’s Going To Happen: Syracuse is back home and on a better trajectory than Maryland. The Orange doesn’t have the flash of, say, Diggs, Long or Likely, but it is better at the line of scrimmage, which is where this game will be won. Hunt will outplay Brown to get Syracuse to 3-0 for the first time since 1991. Prediction: Syracuse 27 … Maryland 24
