1.  Takes subjectivity out of more than half the playoff spots.  Do ‘this’ and your in, regardless of what pundits/committee think.  We’ve seen multiple times in multiple sports where the team that wins the final trophy was not a top 2-4 favorite going in.

2. It is very hard to truly compare conferences (weak or strong) when there is so little inter conference games.  This neutralizes that issue but still allows 2-3 additional spots for deserving teams in potentially ‘tougher’ conferences

3. MOST IMPORTANTLY it keeps interest in college football national.  Without the benefit of tools used for competitive balance (salary cap, resource limitations, draft vs recruiting etc) then there needs to be some way for the cyclically weak areas of the country to still be relevant to those fans.  Otherwise we will be left with a sport that is only relevant in small south/central block of the country which is where are are headed.  A niche following hurts all schools/conferences.
