Conference championship games don't matter if it's a weak conference. The playoff helped because we've had teams win the NC from the 4th spot by beating the teams in front of them. That couldn't happen during the BCS. A playoff that included all conference champions would be ideal. Prove you belong by winning your conference and then beating the other conference winners.
