per Andre Adelson's article today:

In discussing his reasons for leaving

The first was his brother, Arthur. Back when Arthur was playing defensive line for the Orange, he had a similar opportunity to leave school early for the NFL draft. After putting together a season that led him to first-team Big East honors, Arthur Jones decided to stay in school. It was a decision that ended up costing him in the NFL draft, because Jones hurt his pectoral muscle, and then his knee and slid all the way to the Baltimore Ravens in the fifth round.

The second was information he got from the NFL Draft Advisory Board. Chandler Jones knew if he was told he would go anywhere in the first three rounds, he would most likely leave. He was given a second- or third-round grade.

It's understandable, given what happened with Art. He has a lot of potential, but I just don't see him going in the first 3 rounds, unless he absolutely wows them at the combine.

I was suprised to see on the Bills messageboard a couple people had him in their 2nd or 3rd round mock drafts.

He could very easily be a 3rd round pick people tend to forget about the NFL skills they look for. If he is fluid in the cone drills (with hips flipping and quick redirection) and clocks a decent 40 there is no reason for him not to be taken in the third. He has a great frame and is a lunch pail type of player.

great if he does go high.. Just not sure he has done near enough to earn that grade. Arthur dominated games.. Chandler has dominated a few plays.. big difference. I don't even think the injury really made a big difference on how Arthur was drafted. It made it easy to draft him where I think most teams had him anyway. Its not like he was so injured teams were scared off. If he was a 2-3 rd pick he would not have fallen so far down the board with the injuries he had.

Tell that same thing to Adrian Foster no offense but that's not very good logic there

foster was never a high draft pick to begin with? one 1100 yd season with 12 td's and the draft board can say he was 2nd round but RBs are a dime a dozen in the nfl with those stats. Bailey/carter/reyes had those stats behind SU's oline..

Foster wasn't even a draft pick. He was signed as a FA in 09 and the rest is history.

The thing that raised my eyebrow was the speed comments. After seeing him try to run with that interception at LVille, I'm shocked to see he thinks his strength is speed. He looked like a big slow lumbering lineman. Now I'd guess he's probably talking about his speed off the edge but he didn't show to much of that either. Not a slam, just the reality. When he was disruptive it was usually just powering right through the tackle.

What's the deal with declaring. Once you declare are you done - or is there a window to return? Assuming you don't sign with an agent.

People need to understand that he did that with a severe knee sprain and ligament damage. He's not Freeney but is quicker than this board gives him credit for.

I realize he had the knee injury, I just hope it's healed up and ready to go by the time the combines roll around or else he's in trouble.

Third rounds about right for Chandler. With his motor I believe he will perform better than some DE's that are drafted ahead of him. I also think Tiller is going to surprise folks am happy to see him get an invite to an all star game.

You take any team that plays a variation of the Tampa 2 and Chandler is in the mold of player that you are looking for for that system.

wherever he gets drafted it will be on pedigree and potential. i just don't think he was a great college football player, much less dominant. his per game stats barely changed from freshman to junior year. he played 32 games, in which we were 14-18. he had 10.5 career sacks, and 27.5 tackles for loss. he had 0 forced fumbles in his career, and 1 interception in his last game. i'm not really a football junkie so i don't know for sure, his production just seems kind of blah to me.

I think he'd be great as a rush OLB in a 3-4 system if the staff is patient with him.

i would also think outside of the positive physical attributes chandler has, once teams get to talking to him they will learn hes a great kid from the neck up. that does count for a lot that hes a very personable and engageing kid and has had no brush ups with the law what so ever.

Like i have said in other threads, JPP's awesome season helps Chandler. Similar styles and skillsets. Had Chandler come back and crushed it, he would be a first rounder. If he comes back and gets hurt again, even just nagging type that effects his production, then he has exhausted his eligibility without ever putting together a full season... that's a stigma you don't want. Where as right now, you are looking at a guy playing it safe (well played, unfortunately), that a team might be thinking "we can get great value by snapping him up BEFORE having that breakout year."
