I'm not fighting hard but you are ignoring the mathematical equation the NFL uses and reality. There are 3 key factors, you like to think there is only 1. It's just not true. Julius Thomas last year also caught 5 TD's. He produced for guys at his position around the league. Not superstar stats but above average stats and good enough to get Denver a 3rd round pick. It was more than just what he got paid. So, 2 of the 3 factors he killed it on when determining comp picks and combine that with Denver didn't sign another high priced TE (and the guy Denver replaced him with Owen Daniels caught less passes and less TD's than Thomas), so that's why they got a 3rd round pick. If Owen Daneils caught 80 balls and 10 TD's, Denver wasn't getting a 3rd round comp pick. Because of the mathematical equation the NFL uses!!! This is not that tough to understand. If Thomas caught 1 or no TD passes last year and only played in 2 games and Denver brought in another TE and paid him decent money and he caught 8 TD's, guess what Denver wasn't getting a 3rd round pick. But that didn't happen. Thomas had better stats than Daniels and got paid way more money. 2 of the 3 factors favor Denver so that's why they got a 3rd round comp pick. If Chandler Jones walks at the end of the year and gets $52 mill guaranteed (like Vernon) but then Arizona turns around and signs a guy at his same position for $35 mill guaranteed, and the guy who got $35 mill has MORE sacks than Chandler does on his new team wherever that is...guess what they (Arizona) won't get a 3rd round comp pick based off production the guy Arizona signed to replace him. It's more than $$, it's about what happens on the field. There is an actual equation that figures this stuff out and you can choose to ignore it, but its not reality. So to say a team will "automatically" get a 3rd round comp pick is just guessing. You have no idea. What they do on the field matters in determining that.
