Charleston Southern to suspend players vs. FSU

That's right - for buying notebooks, pencils and other school supplies in the school bookstore with money given to them to purchase books. They were told to "use it or lose it" by the school bookstore employees. Now they're being forced to pay it back and are being suspended for one game. And UNC continues to skate...

So FSU is going to score 100 points, all because Football players listened to bookstore employees. Sounds like the coach/support staff needs to explain use of book money/scholarship funds better. If only UNC's AD had this same thought process.

"What we are trying to prevent is winning games in a particular sport that may become forfeitures in the future because players who broke the rules participated in the games".

They had to do it, because it wouldn't have been fair to beat FSU with ineligible players.

Safer to use those funds on electronics, food and hookers. Off the books of course.

Don't forget using school property to get tattoos...

Stupid on so many levels. The good thing is that this is the reverse of what we see from the factories. They suspend guys for games they know they won't lose. Charleston Southern knows they won't win.

OK - so the suspension was school imposed because they are worried what the NCAA will do to them? Do I have that right?

Just a Devil's Advocate question: did the players know that using the book money for other things could get them suspended, or were they unaware of the rule/consequences?

This is just the school going overboard. If it even is an NCAA violation to use scholarship money to buy school supplies other than books, I doubt the NCAA - Evil Empire that it is - would enforce a penalty nearly this severe, especially since the school had the players return the supposedly impermissible purchases.

It sounds like they were unaware it was a violation, which is understandable. It's not exactly intuitive that scholarship money can't be used for school supplies. Counterintuitive, in fact.

From those that have tweeted about this, they had no clue. They believed they were okay since a school employee was telling them to use the money.

I can't imagine that they knew. If you were going to try to get away with something in this situation, would you be purchasing notebooks and school supplies?

one of the most creative ways of making sure you don't get your head bashed in by a bigger and better team.

'wasn't me, I was suspended.'

As long as they didn't use book money to buy one of these. They're freaking dangerous.
