"Simple Rating System; a rating that takes into account average point differential and strength of schedule. The rating is denominated in points above/below average, where zero is average, although it should be noted that margin of victory has been assigned a lower bound of 7 points and an upper bound of 24 points. Non-major opponents are included as a single team in the ratings. My colleague Doug Drinen of Pro-Football-Reference.com has written a great explanation of this method."

curious when archbold was expanded - how that corresponds with the peak and trough. pretty amazing how good they got so quick.

there's a corresponding one with the dome.

there is a lot of interesting stuff in there. marrone scores at 0 overall. totally average.

gerg 2006 was better than 2002, 2009, and 2011 surprisingly

Robinson was a colossal failure here and set the program back years by the time he was ousted, but his 2006 team was a lot better than the record indicated. They lost a close game on the road to start at Wake, which was a top 25 team that year, and the double OT game against a top 15 Iowa squad at the dome. So that doesn't really surprise me.

That team should have been a 7 or 8 win team that year. Pretty sure that was the year that Taj Smith got hurt early in the season and Patterson basically just had Mike Williams to throw to for the rest of the year.

If I recall, we also took out several QB's that season. It was uncanny. And I think it started with Wake, where the backup turned out to be better long-term than the starter from that first game.

it's amazing how bad patterson and robinson's numbers were with smith and mike williams

gotta love those defensive coordinators with no idea what to do on offense.

comparing shafer's (incomplete) 2 year average SRS score to other 2 year spans

better than
Marrone 2009-2010
Marrone 2010-2011
any 2 years of gerg (obvious)
Pasqualoni 2002-2003

then you have to go back to 1982 1983 to find one worse.

Individual years, Shafer 2013 was better than
2011
2010
2009
gerg obviously
2004
2002
1994
1993
1982

this year is better than
2011
2005-2009
2002

The chart was right, I read it wrong.

To be fair though, I don't think they had the best offensive lines to work with. And Taj missed practically a whole year injured in '06.
