Chip Kelly Article - Math

Came across this article today when I was doing my daily google of my name. (ok, it was on the front of Yahoo when I opened my browser).

Seems relevant to recent discussions here.

My apologies in advance to whoever has already linked this once.

The only caveat I would suggest is that he over-simplifies the math to a degree. I don't think it's as simple as "go for it all the time unless it's 4-and-15." I also think, especially in the college game, you can win by letting opponents make mistakes. So if you have a really good defense/special teams -- like Bama -- making teams go a long way for points is a pretty good strategy as well.

I'd also argue that the larger point on Chip Kelly too is that he is running 10 play drives in 55 seconds or something. I mean, his whole approach is revolutionary and I tend to think getting your team to play at that level and speed consistently is easier said than done.

But I think for teams that have a decent offense and are located somewhere near the middle of the field, you are unquestionably doing most every opponent a favor by punting on 4th-and-5.

i think you have to oversimplify the math to make quick decisions i'm fine with that. the crude rules they use now are so dumb.

florida state just had a 25 yard punt on 4th and 3 or 4 from the 50.

You mean to tell me Kelly doesn't have a book in his hand during games that tells him it's a good idea to attempt a 42 yard FG on 4th and 3 down two possessions?

He's missing out. It's obviously holding him back. Doug should hook him up.
