Sure doesnt shy away from playing top teams at the beginning of the season. I wish Coach Boeheim would do the same. An early test each season lets you know where you are and how far you have to go. Valuable experiences for sure.

This season we play Indiana, Nova and st johns along with this tournament in Maui. That's not enough? Plus, any coach worth his saly knows how far he has to go.

No an earlier test like the first 5 games , or the second game like MSU did today and does every season buddy.

2 totally different teams. A very experienced Mich St team can handle early seasons tests while a team like the Orange has a few question marks and two new starters at the top of the zone. We need the cupcakes in the beginning to get our new guys in tune.

Don't worry in 2 weeks SU will be in Maui then back to the mainland for Indiana

When you sign up for Maui three years in advance, you don't know what other teams will be there. When we signed up, we were the Big East team, and UNC was the ACC team. Something was worked out to make us the ACC team. If we were still in the Big East, we would have been there with UNC. Three years ago, UConn was there the year they won the NC. And MSU was there the same year. We were not ducking anything by signing up for Maui.

SU plays only 6 out of conference games that aren't maui, indiana, nova, and st johns, thats it and 2 are done already.

And we spaced those 6 pretty well. Right after the maui Cuse is playing one easy game, then indiana, one easy game, then st johns at the garden, then one easy game then nova. anyone that says our schedule isn't good or bitches about our home schedule, only 6 out of conference cupcake games, 4 of our last 5 games are on the road before the acc tournament.

Just waiting for that first big game which is understandable.

I don't get this whole Maui is weak this year because after Minnesota we get Cal/Arkansas and I think it will be Cal and don't sleep on them they are much better then the Cal we faced in the tourney, then on the other side of the bracket is Gonzaga(15) or Baylor(25)

Especially if Crabbe can get hot from 3, they might be back in it.

(Edit: this post might sound a little negative, but I am far from down on the team. I just think we have something to prove before being coddled by ESPN employees, whom I dont hold in high regards anyhow).

I am much happier about the pre-conference games this year than in years past. A little less excited than I was originally, though. I mean we might actually get to play the #15 team before the conference starts! But even the anticlimax compared to what could have been aside, the OP has a good point. Look at those 4 programs tonight and tell me they dont traditionally play a tougher non conference schedule than us, especially early on. I mention this every season, it isn't like I just decided to agree with albanycuse just now. Our opponents definitely have some more recognizable names that regardless of their decline(like washed up lounge singers) should still carry a higher RPI than the St Bonevanture Bona Wolves of the world though. If people complain about ESPN not mentioning us with any of those teams, it would help if we played them, and even more if we actually beat them. But we need to get better first? All I heard tonight is that those teams were going to be much better as the season progressed, possibly Michigan St aside, although I imagine that they too will improve to an extent. I missed the first half of our game tonight, so I have to ask how we look compared to those 4 teams. I'd like us to get more mentions too, but I'm not going to knock ESPN until I think we've done something to show ourselves worthy.

As for road games, when do we have what some would call our first true "away" game? Leaving out MSG(and the neutral paradise games), its 2 months into the schedule on January 7th at VA Tech. Barring surprises, I'd say this schedule is quite favorable in terms of winning games, even though we should be 20+ point favorites less than usual early on. I'm not even sure what folks would consider our first tough away game, or how many of those we have this season. I'm admittedly not an expert on(or a fan of) the ACC like some, so I am asking these as genuine questions. Also curious what folks' projections are in terms of NCAA parity in comparison to seasons past. Watching 4 of the top 5 teams in the same night just has my head abuzz with questions! :)

Just think how much better the last 4 years would have turned out if we had a "test" in the first week of the season. :bang:

Do people really think that one difficult game in November will make a team that much better in March?

For the record, SU has scheduled it both ways (tough games/easy games) in the past and it never seemed to make a difference come tourney time. In fact, there was one year where we beat some high profile programs in consecutive games and didn't even make the big dance. If someone can put together some stats that shows there is a correlation between opponent ranking and end-season success, then maybe I'll change my mind.

We are rally only squabbling over 1 BIG game. In other words we don't have a game against a TOP10 raked team in the OOC schedule. Duke and MSU almost always ha one marquee game like that. We have had some week OOC schedules in the past but this is not one of them. Going forward with Nova, St John's and ACC/BiG challenge we will have an excellent OOC strength of schedule. It will likely be the teams in our preseason tourney that determine weather its elite or just strong.

You completely ruined the fun, Francis! What if Jason Kidd and Kevin Johnson got hot from three?
Sorry. th_kglaugh.png
