One thing Gerry has - he is unique. There was never and will never be a player in the state of PA maybe any state who did what he did in the state playoffs in HS an in the manner he did then followed to accomplish what he did in college. Especially not someone all of 6-0 tall. He has a tenacity paired with understanding of the game that’s hard to explain. The same hard ass side paired with building a strong bond that’s described of him as coach is who he was as a player. He was as intense as they get and had a killer mentality when we played them in HS then at things like district awards etc he was chill and not above anyone even if there was some typical trash talking and good natured banter. Gerry’s flaw is found within his strength as a competitor. The push and desire to win can create blind spots where he can miss things and overplay his hand. It’s not uncommon in highly competitive younger coaches - it’s actually something Hurley struggled with early on at UConn before it all clicked. Thus, Gerry needs a staff and a strong voice or two that can help him in his approach and game management to truly excel. He needs a Luke Murray metaphorical equivalent on the staff. I don’t mind if he brings one of Blackwell or AO but preferably not both. I’d like to see Devo involved somehow. Add a high level recruiter and another basketball mind from outside the family. Finally just show us the money. Time to get everyone on board and that includes AW. Figure out a way he can be the guy who can setup individual NIL deals for bigger fish while others do so via a more collective contribution so that you have multiple paths that meet all the regulatory guidelines. The NIL system will ultimately collapse on itself be it via law or the NCAA or lack of sustainability but we need a collaborative model that’s multi faceted getting money in via big donors, fan contributions at games or events or a better managed subscription service with a core board or management structure that handles clearinghouse matters and acts somewhat loosely like a silent brokerage akin to whatever Duke does. Lastly, Duke is hungry for a Scheyer / program nemesis that sells big and the ACC is too, and in short order. With the right mix Gerry could be that guy ( I thought BH could too). There is opportunity here while we sit in the darkness to find our way out even with GMac. It won’t be for certain but it just might be the time where the iron is hottest which goes against what I had been hellbent in my thinking even a couple weeks ago…
