Here is my take. I believe wholeheartedly that despite having been involved in a lot of behind-the-scenes negotiations with Syracuse, the Hodgson camp got the impression that him landing the job wouldn't be a slam dunk. That either we weren't going to offer, or we had him behind other candidates we valued more. Prior to yesterday's loss, Hodgson and USF were riding high and had been on a sustained run of kicking butt, so this was probably not well received. So rather than get egg on the face, they got out in front to manage the narrative from a PR perspective. SU didn't turn Hodgson down... HE turned THEM down. And a vague reason was given -- i.e., Syracuse couldn't meet our financial demands, because we are a HOT COMMODITY. That's why when Hodgson got asked about it in the press conference on Wednesday, he didn't have a comment. That press leak probably wasn't from him, it was from his camp. Goodman [who I don't hold in high regard as a sports journalist] then took that statement about not enough $$$ and read into it. When the reason was likely BS to begin with. MY OPINION ONLY -- Syracuse liked Hodgson, but liked a couple of other candidates similarly. And Hodgson was more expensive due to his larger support staff requirements than the others, who they rated as about the same. So why pay more when you can get somebody you think is just as good for less overhead?
