All things considered, Cuse is in a real tough spot here. If Autry is fired, you POTENTIALLY (that conversation would need to be had) lose the support and son of your most recognizable bball alum. On the other hand, college basketball is proving that it is very difficult to win with young players, so even if Freeman/Moore come back (that’s a big if especially for Freeman, you can tell by his body language he’s not happy) with the addition of Anthony/White, chances are that team still isn’t ultra competitive. They would need a stud veteran PG and stud veteran center, which we likely don’t have the NIL funds to accomplish. On top of that, Autry has shown NOTHING that makes anyone believe he can mold talent into a winning product on the floor. Another year of mediocre or worse play on the court will crush this program that already hasn’t been relevant for a dozen years besides a fluke trip to the final four in ‘16 and a fluke trip to the sweet 16 in ‘18. Not to mention, there are some pretty good candidates who won’t be available for long, including Hodgson and Murray. Personally I think you have the convo with Melo, assure them there is a plan, and go get one of those two guys. Hodgson was Oats right hand man and was referred to as a “shark” on the recruiting trail by multiple coaches. Oats plays an exciting, up tempo, in your face style, and the only reason many in central NY don’t like him is because he called out JB’s squad for being soft (he was right) a few years back when he was at UB. Hodgson would bring a similar style, and he also has a smoke show for a wife so he’s obviously used to overachieving. Murray basically designed UCONN’s offense, and is considered an innovator amongst the coaching profession. He is obviously well versed in analytics, and knows how to find and mold WINNING players. I think missing out on one of these two guys would be a damn shame. I know they both are unproven as head coaches, at least at the P4 level in Hodgson’s case, but the upside is tremendous. Compared to Autry’s qualifications when he was promoted, it’s night and day.
