Here's the fact of the matter (in my opinion). Need to start scheming people open. We have a couple Wide Receivers tops that can do that through their accomplished route running. I'm sure some of my fellow coaching buddies can speak to this as well, but when you go to formations (like the 12 base people are speaking about), it gives the offense an advantage around the line of scrimmage. As a defensive coordinator, when I have teams that go Pro-Tight, Ace Tight, I-Double Tight; it puts more work on me to protect the box. I want to make sure I have players in every gap on defense. When you put two tight ends on the line of scrimmage, it accounts for two extra gaps I have to try and plug/contain. When you strip formations and play calling down, the true key to success is "Do I have more helmets in this space than the other side?" If you do, you have a chance to break one, get positive yardage, and can create solid gains if everyone does their assignment. It also means it makes the BCR (backside counter/reverse) much more dangerous. If I'm shifting over players to get helmets in gaps when the Tight-End and H-Back are on the same side, the weak side LB/DE/CB need to be on their game in case of that counter, pitch, reverse - ESPECIALLY if you have pulling guards. An offense like the 12 formation can cause a lot of wrinkles a defensive coach has to worry about. This is the primary reason you have Offensive Coordinators falling in love with the bubble screen. If I have 3 WR's on 2 CB's, there's a higher probability that play can break for good yards (given the other intangibles are set up correctly). I've seen many college coaching clinics where Offensive Coordinators call plays based on statistics, percentages, and probability; because they're so good they've crunch those numbers. Anywho - there's my opinion on the recent grumblings around what out offense could look like - from a DC aspect.
