This is my observation and I readily concede I do not follow HS and lower division coaching remotely as close as many on this board.

I like what HCSS has done/continued from Marrone. Specifically, Syracuse is bringing young leaders. A benefit of bringing HS captains is that they provide leadership on the field. The benefit bringing former coordinators and head coaches from lower divisions is that they provide more leadership.

One cost of success is that our coaches will be poached by schools with deeper pockets. hCSS is looking to the future as well as immediate needs. Let's be honest, McDonald will not be here for a long time if he ramps up this offense. He will get an offer he can't refuse - nor would we condemn him for it - like HC, NFL, or $$$$. HCSS has people in place who can step up as our staff receives what they have earned. HCSS appears to know he will have turnover and he is keeping an eye on filling holes. Good management is always grooming talent. Reminds me of an old Air Form maxim that you bare not ready for promotion until you have trained your replacement.

I like how our staff works together and I believe these new adds will fall into place rather quick and we will be the better for it. I will be sad to see great coaches leave but I will wish them all the best and enjoy watching HCSS backfill with guys who want to coach here.

Good post. There is something to be said about chemistry among the staff, and that goes for all facets. Coaching, game-planning, recruiting, family-life, a comfortable workplace and a general sense of loyalty and trust. Guys will come and go, but Shafer has assembled a young staff who possess the energy, passion and understanding that is needed to deal with 18-22 year old kids... especially on the recruiting trail. This is a player's coaching staff.

I think the 2 new hires will help us from a recruiting standpoint, which imo is far more important at this stage of our rebuild. We need to keep elevating our talent level, and that means getting us more established in places like NJ, and Eastern PA.

I'm also starting to think that McDonald isn't in that much of a hurry to leave. This tweet from McDonald stood out when Perles was found out to be leaving;

Seeing people as they truly are is a hard reality. #loyalty
I think it will take a quite an offer to pry McDonald away from Shafer, and if that happens it will mean that more then likely we will be in pretty good shape. I am more concerned with losing great up and coming coaches , who can recruit like Daoust and Lester. I can easily see both of them being court as coordinators after next season (if successful). It's more important now then ever that Shafer is given the money to pay his assistants. At least a salary that is on par with the rest of the ACC. A lot of people think these coaches will stay just because of loyalty, but if the Perles move shows anything there are always other factors, be it family or financial. Anyways with the current roster, plus the 2014 recruiting class, to go along with the re-worked staff I feel we are in great shape to start making some noise. I still have my sights set on 2015 as our breakout year, but I can see some noise being made this upcoming season.

McDonald only leaves for a HC job or an SEC OC job. Book it.

Possibly a few choice jobs in other conferences. Definitely not a B1G mindset no worries there.

Personally, I am think he stays a few years and perfects a system then gets the offer he can't refuse. I think we improve next year but I am not sure the elite schools pressure him until he has a couple big time wins against top teams/defenses. Racking up 50 points against a Big 12 defense does not mean much these last couple years.

If he can build a high powered offense a la something like what Leach has done, he'll get offers. For coordinators, no one cares about the wins, just the numbers and the recruiting.

Agreed, to a point. With Syracuse back on the upswing, he is far less apt to take a lateral move. A high profile team with lots of money will get him, OKState, Mississippi, WVU probably will not get his attention.

This is just an opinion and not worth a heated debate. I am just glad he is here and has gotten some of the tools he wants to build his system. Hard nosed and fast strike. I'm loving it. (Mods, any similarities between my quote and a certain worldwide burger chain's ad campaigns is purely coincidental and no copyright infringements are intended). Now to GM, Just do it!

If you can believe this article, he's got no desire to be a HC. At the same time, I'm not naive enough to believe everything coaches say to the media. They're always at their "dream job" until the next one comes along.

Agree, statements need to be taken with a grain of salt. He may not want to be an HC now, but things change and people mature and want to continue to grow. I would be very happy to keep him here as long as he keeps a very good offensive system and good players coming in. I just think that as a young guy, he will grow and want to take on other challenges down the road. Like Czar stated, if the SEC comes calling ($$$$$$) he will at least have to listen.

But if someone does come calling with those opportunities, that only means that good things happened here. I'm ok with those types of trades.

Scott appears to be the kind of coach, who has made many connections in his years of coaching, also he would want his coaches to move to a better job.
