Lots of discussion about our coaches, who stays, who leaves...

Having watched ball for too many years too many coaches there are a few things that i have come to belive when it comes to the college game.

1: The head coach needs to be strong at a minimum of one of three things. He either needs to be a very good D coach, O coach or a great CEO type. I would put Shafer as a great D coach and Doug as a great CEO. If not exceptional in one of these areas they will fail.

2: You better have a solid OC or DC if your head coach is strong on the other side of the ball. This in my opinion was and is HCSS weakness so far

3: The most important position coaches are the OL and DL coaches followed by the QB coach.

4: Other assistant coaches should be recruiters as much as position coaches.

5: Any coach needs a minimum of four years to prove themselves.

At this point i believe that Scott has a solid chance of making it. He is an exceptional D coach. He made a mistake on a solid bet with George. It was a bet worth taking and i truly believe he always has Lester as a back up. I think that Adams was a huge mistake not in hiring him but in placing him in charge of the OL. My sense is that if provided with time, possibly more time than many of us will want to endure that he will grow into a very good coach. I believe that he is a solid three years away from that point and im not sure if he will be provided that much rope. Lets hope that Lester steps up and that we keep TD. Should be a very interesting off season.

How good a DL coach was Adam - anybody know? I wonder if Shafer figured Daoust would leave soon and he'd move Adam to DL and hire a new OL coach at that time.

If that was the reason, it was a lousy one. Adam was in D3 so it doesn't seem like he was a hot commodity who needed to be scooped up last year.

Wasn't there a rumor about Daoust leaving last year though?

Maybe, but unless Adam had another D1 offer that made it urgent, it wouldn't make sense to have that be the reason.

At this point Adam is a good guy, was available and fit in the budget.

Pretty much sums it up nicely. I totally agree with the McDonald/Lester theory and thus, I think that type of thinking might have something to do with the Adam hire.

After reading the SU Budget Committee report, I believe that the program is under fairly tight financial control at this point and Shafer may be constrained in his ability to hire coaches.

I actually think we will have a decent idea if Lester is the guy fairly early into the 2015 season. He knows what he has to work with and he has run his offense for several years. If it is going to work in the ACC we should get a few clues early on (clues not conclusions).
