Always amazed by the inconsistency lax social media/forum guys have with praising top attack performances against a bad team and/or bad defense. CJ Kirst is that dude don't get me wrong, but everyone is hyping up a 9 goal performance against 1-5 Yale, with a notoriously poor defense, where literally all his goals were wide open shots from close range, rebounds, and offball finishes, aside from one dodge against a short stick. If anything, you think the praise would be for his running mate Goldstein, who drew the eyes of the defense and made the pinpoint passes on most of the goals. If Spallina has a game like that then it is a mad dash in the comments for everyone to point out Yale's bad defense, that all the goals were offball and not 1v1 against a longpole, and so on. He went 5 and 6 against a similarly poor defense on over 60% shooting and actually scored against a longpole on three of those, and while the local media and cuse fans give him props, it is not talked about by the same people fawning over Kirst. It is totally fine that people don't heap praise on Spallina for big games against a bad defense, but where the hell is the consistency? Kirst, as good as he is, gets locked up in certain top match ups too. He went 2-1 against the one higher level defense they played this season in Penn State and had the same stat line against them last season. He went 0-1 against Penn with the playoffs on the line last year. He went 2-1 in the first round playoff loss against Michigan in 2023. He gets some benefits not going up against every ACC team plus MD and Hop in his regular seasons, or a schedule like Hops in the big 10. I think he is better than Spallina, but it is not because of big performances against a team like Yale. And yet, you have people talking like he just punched his ticket for the Tek this year because of that game.
