College Football "Pecking Order"

They need a "Peon" category below Peasants for Buttgers. ;)

I would opt for the "Court Fool" category for Buttgers...

Of the 23 teams in the top 2 tiers, there are 4 ACC teams, 3 Big 12 teams, 3 Pac 12 teams.

Your Honor, the Defense rests.

Really don't get UCLA in the Barons. At all. Sure, they have history, but since the other school in their city rose back to power, it was at their expense, I don't think anyone considers them anything close to a "power". But in the same breath, I don't get how every college player doesn't want to play there.

I'll take this. As long as they sustain themselves as knights, we are good

plus, you get lsu replacing tenn as a king and then 3 of the other teams to drop rank are in the pac.

SU needs a few years in a row of 8 wins then a bowl for 9 and its baroncity.

Syracuse, IS a FOOTBALL school who happens to play very good basketball.

It's a fun exercise. I think it just shows how even downtrodden "brands" have a lot of pent-up equity and can re-establish themselves quickly. This of course is good news for our dear ol' SU.

At first I questioned FSU and Miami being Kings, given that neither has been relevant on the national title scene for a decade. But then I figured that if either landed in the final 4 tomorrow their brand would instantly be restored.

So I think that's what this is about, and maybe explains UCLA's status as well.

Honestly, I think you could make a case for creating another pecking order category. The Knights category could be divided up further. BYU, Colorado, Georgia Tech, Maryland, Michigan State, Pittsburgh, Syracuse, TCU, and Washington all have won NCs in the poll era. Obviously, current perception keeps some of these schools from being Barons (in same vein as Minnesota's current label as Peasant despite 4 NCs in poll era - none recently).

Also, not buying his claim that West Virginia is a Baron.

Yeah, and I'm sure some of the bottom feeders will say "this is just Stewart Mandel's opinion, so who cares". But he's one of the better and more respected college football writers out there.

The UCLA thing puzzles me more because I can remember when FSU and Miami were good, to me that's still recent. Can't remember with UCLA, other than 1998 when they were nearly undefeated but stopped playing defense (Miami and Wisconsin just scored on them again as I'm typing this). Tennessee was bumped down because they haven't been very good since the national title year in 1999. How long does UCLA need to be average to get downgraded?

I guess the thing with Barons is that they seem to be the programs that have a successful history (if not a successful present) along with huge fanbases that sustain them through the lean years. Compare them to the Knights and I think it's the fanbase that's the difference. The only Knights that have fanbases equivalent to the Barons are South Carolina, Michigan State, and BYU. But none of those three have the history of past success that the Barons have (aside from a few signature seasons).

UCLA is still in LA, and they still draw 55-65K a game despite being pretty mediocre. Personally I'd put them at Knight status, but you can make a case for Baron I suppose, based on the fanbase.

Hoops school. Jim Brown is only walking through that door to kick your ass.

no, but Marvin Harrison may walk through that door and bust a cap in my arse, and he hasnt been gone that long.

Football school.

I think he is being generous with some of those schools. I would put it as:

Kings- schools that a frosh would expect to play for a national title in their 4 years there

Bama, Fla, LSU, Ohio St, Oklahoma, Texas, USC

Princes (adding this)- schools that would have a decent shot but not expected

FSU, Miami, Mich, Neb, ND, PSU, Auburn, Oregon

Barons- schools that would have an outside shot

VT, Clemson, UGA, Tenn, Wisc

Knights- schools that would expect to play in major Bowls but be short of the playoffs

A&M, WV, Ark, Boise, Iowa, GA Tech, K St, Mich St, Okie St, So Car, TCU

Peasants- schools that could easily jump up into the mix

UCLA, ASU, BYU, BC, Colorado, MD, Mizzou, Pitt, Stanford, SU, Utah, UVA, Wash, Zona, Baylor, Louisville, UNC

The rest of the schools do not deserve to be listed.

He'll miss, and shoot you in the hand. So you'll be fine. Trust me, you get used to the other hand. Was that out loud?
