Commanders to retire Art Monk’s number

Would be curious to see how many SU guys have their numbers retired in the NFL. I know we have 9 HOFers, but then I think of Freeney's 54 isn't retired by the colts, but Ernie's 45 is retired by Cleveland etc

Brown
Davis
Little
Csonka
McNabb
And now you can add Monk to that list of great players.
I was watching when Joe Gibbs was coaching those Redskins. What an excellent player/WR Monk was. Set the standard for catches back then. I am so happy for him and the Washington fans who celebrated him when he was playing and now again when he is having is jersey retired. Congratulations Art!

well, for one Freeny wore 93 with the colts, and two, they haven't retired anyone not named Peyton Mannings number since the 70s, so it's not totally surprising.

Art and I were classmates and I was fortunate enough to interview him at one point for the DO.

Hard to describe how humble and laid back he was, just exuded calm and cool.

Needless to say, that was not necessarily the norm.

I’m sure that serenity served him well in his illustrious career.

All honors for Art have been well deserved.

Mrs. o79 was in work-study and worked at Brockway dining hall. Back then much of the team ate there. She always told me what a courteous, friendly guy Art was. Not to say other players were mean or dismissive, but Art was friendly and engaging.

An honor well-deserved. Congrats, Art!

And yeah fair. Some just don’t retire numbers either. But it’s funny to see 8 player HOFers but only 6 have their numbers retired

Washington was the team I followed in my younger days and Art was one of my favorite players. So happy for him. Classy guy!

That was really a classy thing to do by the Redskin/Commanders organization. They have a lot of work to do to rebuild trust in that organization post-Daniel Snyder but that's a great first step.

Monk is first in Washington history in receptions and receiving yards by a sizeable margin, and 2nd all time in receiving TDs. How on Earth did this take 32 years to happen?

I know a huge percentage of Daniel Snyder's daily agenda was taken up with being evil, but this is insanely overdue.

That said, I'm obviously very happy for Art. Great man on and off the field.
