The budget committee of South Carolina's House of Representatives voted Tuesday to close South Carolina State University temporarily in an attempt fix the school's financial troubles, according to The State.

The move would close the school entirely for the 2015-16 and 2016-17 school years and the school's athletic department would be suspended. ..

I can understand how closing the Athletics dept for two years will help control financial issues, but I can't understand how closing the whole school for two years will help the budget. If you don't hold classes you have no students. If you have no students you have no tuition. If you have no tuition you have no money. They will still have building and land that will need to be maintained.

My guess - and I emphasize the word guess - is that by having no students and staff to support, even with no tuition coming in they will lose significantly less money

yeah, this decision doesn't make much sense.

Isn't this the equivalent of the death penalty for a university?

It will be a pretty bad faculty when it opens up again

If you live in SC like I do, it's easy to understand this example of the stupidity of the state's government. This is but a single illustration of their ineptitude.

Can't help but think of UAB and Alabama. Does U of South Carolina need some money that they don't want diverted to South Carolina St?

Not knowing the history, at first glance this appears to be a power play by the gov't to force the school to balance its budget, after having told the school to do so previously. You would think that the SC government would remove the school president/chancellor and appoint a czar + assistants to operate the school without an additional deficit.

Just turn the campus into a casino for a few years. Boom, problem solved.
