Great win for Duke and coach K. He's the best coach and has been for some time. His players are always prepared, and they almost always capitalize on opportunities. Turns out against Wisconsin Okafor was less important than many thought mostly because Winslow avoided #4 until very late and Jones and Allen were super aggressive and hit big shots and free throws. Jefferson was aggressive on defense. All three of those guys aggressively checked Dekker throughout and successfully took Dekker out of his rhythm. I give Wisconsin heaps of credit for being a great team and fundamentally sound until the end. They battled through some very challenging, and for them very confusing, moments particularly during the second half and kept competing. Dekker was never able to adjust to the hand checks and was frustrated throughout, but that's something young players have to learn how to play through especially in championship type games. Other Badgers stepped up, and despite being taken out of their comfort zone they continued to battle and to compete and nearly pulled off an amazing championship win. In the end we saw two great teams with high character kids, two great schools, and two great coaches. Coach K once again does a masterful job. On Friday some of the media in Indy called out college officiating for being bad. Somehow I doubt that thread had legs. That's entertainment. Let's just hope the game continues to adjust and to improve. Officials are already evaluated, but perhaps they can be better evaluated. That's a process that could never be public, but perhaps throw quality independent third-party evaluators into the mix and spice up the feedback. Create better guidelines and a clear rating system with some bite. At the very least that would give the television ratings a boost to start the next season.
