their rationalization was as banal as, 'better safe than sorry'. In the midst of great uncertainty and with the blessing of bad science adhered to by virtually all the intelligentsia it was generally felt that if the Jews were not removed the consequences would likely be so dire that action should not be delayed.
A less glamorous but more rationale way to deal with uncertainty is the ancient Hippocratic Oath, "first do no harm."
