I'm fully aware that they can absolutely win this game, and it will be a dog fight, but the confidence is surprising.

The general game plan I read revolves around hitting a lot of 3's. Really, that's the game plan? Any game where you hit a lot of 3's you're probably gonna be in/win. Plus, SU has the 32nd ranked 3 pt % defense. So hit a lot of 3's is your best strategy?

Not to mention that their offensive style allows us to cover up our biggest defensive deficiency- rebounding. The one counter argument to our success shutting down 3 pt shooting is that it leads to so many offensive rebounds. But Wisky's whole offensive strategy this year seems to be to lay off the glass to prevent transition. If they alter that mix here, that could leave them vulnerable to our biggest strength, transition offense.

Also, why is Wisky hitting all their shot's the only outcome that gets discussed? What if we hit all of our shots? That seems equally likely to me.

Look, we could absolutely lose this game, and Wisky is a very good team, but the idea that a fanbase should be so confident based on the idea of hitting a bunch of 3's just seems crazy to me.

well the feeling is theyll control tempo, slow us down in transition, take care of the ball, and make it a rock fight game in the 50s. which it probably will be. and thats how we usually get bounced in the tourny in the past. but this team seems different. we've won games like that the entire season. so i can understand people's concern, but we should be confident we can win against any style cuz we've done it all year.

there is a lot more to their offense than just "putting up a lot of threes"

the Badgers are smart and patient, with crisp passers who find open shots for their teammates, and Jordan Taylor is a playmaker who could play for anyone.

their style is arguably the worst possible matchup for Syracuse, which has an on-again, off-again half court offense and needs to generate turnovers to really shine. So, Badger fans see a team that struggles in the halfcourt going up against one of the best defenses in the nation, and a team that needs to generate turnovers for its offense to hum going up against on of the two least turnover prone teams in the nation . . . it would be more of a mystery if they weren't confident.

I think SU pulls this one out, but I'm just a sliver over 50% confident on that.

Because everyone knows they are going to impose their will on us. We likely will not impose our will on them. So, it will likely come down to a 50/50 game...who makes their jump shots kind of game.

well to counter that, we're much better against m2m than zone, and probably our biggest weakness is defensive rebounding, and wiscy does not crash the offensive boards. so not all is lost. if wiscy played zone, crashed the offensive boards and yet still was great at transition defense, then id be really worried.

This is what I'm hanging my hat on.

Extend the defesne to cover the shooters, whic h we are good at when we put our minds to it.

Trap in the corners, something we haven't done in a while but probably can do vs. a three point team.

When we have the ball use passes to set up drives rather than one-on-one moves. And if the open lane isn't there, dish off rather than throwing up an awkward shot.

Instead of trying to run, send the guards to the glass and try to get some offensive reboudns of our own.

I think it just has to do with how we are and have been perceived all year. Most of the media and other fan bases (which bought into the media's push) believed we weren't that elite to start with. Throw in the loss of Melo and now we're extremely vulnerable. All of these teams and fan bases have bought intot hat.

We might be the worst great team of all time.

Your third statement is something that's been the true variable for this team. Sometimes polar opposites, from one game to the next: The savvy for finding the open man. The KSU game was a step in the right direction. If SU has a breakout game in this area, there are more than a few players who could do some good, moving without the ball in the half-court. Quick unselfish ball movement is the key.

Rewatch UNCA the game. What seems likely to you has no historical basis: Wisc shoots the 3pt at 36%, since the BEC has started, SU has shot it at about 33% and it would probably be a 1% lower except for Dion's once in a career game against UCinn. JS staying hot would go a long way to fixing this.

I think a lot of it has to do with Wiscy being a #4 seed. I think the tendency is to get more confident prior to a game when you've already played to seed in the NCAAs...if Wisconsin loses its easier to walk away at the end of the game still feeling good about the season, so a Wisconsin fan can allow themselves to build up (false) confidence before the game.

I do think that some in the media have acted like Fab Melo was comparable to the Shaq with the Lakers, so in general the public has overvalued how important he was to the team. Important yes - but the reports of Syracuse's demise have been greatly exaggerated.

Wisky fans think they are playing against the kind of crappy zones they see occasionally during the season. A stationary zone where they can get easy uncontested threes. Keep dreaming. It will be low scoring. Dion is the key. If he's feeling it they will have a lot of problems containing him.

Exactly, MBiker^^^
Even their PG Taylor was dismissive at their presser- something to the effect that they've faced zones before, etc.
I can understand their confidence, but the reality of playing against our zone is quite different.
Game on!!!!

This is where I sometimes detest the zone defense SU plays. I feel its greatest weakness is that it cedes total control of the game to the opponent when they are on offense. You have a team that loves to run, but plays a defense that gives the opponent the time to decide what they want to do. This is only a major problem in the games where Syracuse doesn't hit shots. You give the opponent the ability to do nothing other than pass the ball around for the majority of the shot clock - something Wisconsin excels at. When you combine a lack of scoring, with an opponent willing to burn clock, and who happily chucks up threes, then you can run into the same situation as the Cincy game: sometimes all those prayers from outside are answered.

I think SU, should THEY be on and hitting, would wipe the floor with Wisconsin. If SU happened to get a start against Wisconsin like Cincy got against SU, turn the game off at the ten minute mark, it's over. I'm just afraid of a game like the Butler game, like the UND game, like the Cincy game, like the USF game, where the other team is on, and SU is off. Especially when you look at Wisconsin athletically, and wonder how they can hang with SU. The answer will be, because SU lets them, by settling for awful shots and hitting none of them.

Guys, don't let someone who has never played the game influence you. The Badgers should be scared stuffless. Please go to ESPN and log on Wisconsin and look at their pathetic offensive statistics. Their defense looks great because they burn the shot clock. They have a short slowfooted unathletic team centered around a good point guard. Only one of their players would crack our rotation. I'll get four other guys from the westside of Syracuse and play them at Schiller Park and kick their a$$. I'm all in. LGO. Get outta here with that 50/50 rubbish.

Actually, Jared Berggren moves really well for his size and can put it on the floor a little bit. I worry about him more than anybody.

We do let the offense dictate offense when we're back on D, but I think that's okay. We want the easiest baskets possible, a steel or turnover gets us that and is created by either passes into gaps, trapping, or poking (Dion). The more their offense passes it around trying to find a good seam, the more opportunities for us to get a turnover for an easy transition basket. Or they pass it around and we get a shot clock violation (love seeing that happen). We've done well with this against most teams this year. And we have also shown the ability to hit the big shots when needed and win close, tough and physical contests.

I think we will win it late second half personally, as we tire them down.

Did you really just say schiller park?? The WORST court to play ball at? Where there is one basket and a big a$$ hill behind the rim so if you made a swish in the no net rim the ball would roll down the hill? lol

I know I rather play Wisconsin than a big east team, who've we dominated all year long. They might run the clock out and find open shots and play sticky "Wincy" defense but we played against that all year long from top AA Big east players, there comes a time where talent comes into affect and SU has them beat by a long shot!!! And please this team is nothing like Butler, Butler had two nba players on the team and made it to the finals two years in a row. SU wins by 14!
