While browsing MSN today I came across this! 1 of 51 of the nicest places in America: Good for us.

From Readers Digest, 6/18

The Nicest Places in Every State: Syracuse, New York
This year, the St. Baldrick's Foundation's head-shaving event to support kids with cancer, held at Kitty Hoynes Irish Pub & Restaurant in Syracuse, brought in more than half a million dollars! What makes this event so incredibly special, according to Syracuse resident, Sophia Meskos, is the way the entire Central New York community comes together. 'Whether five- or 85-years-old, our locals understand the impact they're making in our community and around the world. Our community is connected to the cause and will champion it always.' Do you live in one of the Nicest Places in America? Tell us about it, and your hometown could end up on the cover of Reader's Digest!

I'm always confused how we end up on a lot of those "Worst Places to Live" lists, and then we also end up on a lot of those "Best Places to Live" lists.
I guess that just proves that beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Translation: job market is weak here - or better put - only strong in a few specific sectors — but if you have one of those jobs this is one of the best places to live.

As long as the football team isn't 'nice' to it's opponents.

“Best places to live” = they visited sometime between May and October.

“Worst places to live” = they visited sometime between November and April.

Pretty sure this list isnt best places but nicest, as in the people are kind.

I have long maintained that large snow storms bring out our best: people helping strangers with shoveling, snow blowing, digging out of snow banks, towing cars back onto the road, etc.

Everyone loves to make that joke but it’s really such a lazy excuse. We might get more snow than everyone else but our plows are under appreciated- the roads are only challenging a few times a year on average. And places like Minneapolis make our winters look toasty.

It boils down to the job market. With a good income and family in good health in these parts, Winter is just basketball season and what better place to spend it than in the dome?

The negativity and inferiority complex stems from people who are just not happy with their circumstances. The weather is just a convenient excuse that gets recycled ad nasueum.

Seasonal affective disorder is real

I’d like to agree, but I don’t. The plows handle it fine, the Dome is a great place to spend 15 nights a winter...what about the other 135 nights? I like to go outside. Not being able to do that for 5-6 months is tough.

If the weather would actually break in late February(like it often pretends to), and March and April were decent, then winter wouldn’t be too bad. It’s that one good week in late February followed by the nutkick of a major snowstorm in March, followed by 6 more weeks of disappointingly crappy weather that gets to me.

But all the same, the days of 95+ and nights of 75+ all summer long that a lot of the warm weather states get are brutal too. Nothing’s perfect.

I love winter and snow from about Thanksgiving to late January, but I would reach a point around February living in Syracuse every year where I was just physically exhausted from it.

Yup. Feb-April is just soul crushing. Every year.

Disagree. Late March and April are definitely not soul crushing ...like at all. Snow is breaking and Spring is coming in. Its February that's the absolute worst month ever

Agreed. February is probably the toughest stretch, but it's just one month. This whole "3 weeks of nice weather a year" is such stupid hyperbole. By the time we hit March, USUALLY the signs of spring are noticeable. The days are longer, for one, and due to the increased sun angle, it's hard for snow to stick to roads during the daytime once we hit late Feb-early March. We had a very cold spring this year but it was an extreme outlier.

Nov-Jan you've got the holidays and SU basketball. If you need to get outside in winter, learn to use the grill and a patio space heater.

Which is why I have been spending the whole month of Feb. plus in Florida for quite some time, makes winter in CNY not so bad.

Lol, that doesn’t sound enjoyable whatsoever. I want lakes, rooftop or outdoor bars/seating, running, hiking, etc. Sunlight helps too. I despise Feb-March. This year’s April was an extreme outlier no question, but April is always a wildcard. A nice April is a huge plus when we do get one, no question.

Then you should move to Texas or Florida where everyone stays inside until the sun sets or it's November-March. It's the opposite problem, but nobody talks about that because it's not cool to bash the heat.
