I just heard this on Marty and McGee, and I am paraphrasing.
When Rex Chapman was a HS senior, and Mr. Basketball in Kentucky, it was presumed he would go to Louisville. Their style of play fit his, they were a top program, and Kentucky was going on probation.
Denny Crum told him that he really wanted Rex to play at Louisville, but that Denny, as a Kentucky resident, felt that Rex owed it to himself and the state of Kentucky to at least visit Kentucky.
The rest is history.
There is so much that goes on behind the scenes in recruiting that people, at large, are never privy to.
We make a lot of assumptions about why or why not kids pick or don't pick schools. We just don't know.
