Cooper Flagg Coming Back Next Season?

The #1 pick in the NBA draft might be a pay cut.
Are you hinting at inside knowledge? Or joking around? That would mean he’s making more than $13 million at Duke?!

According to Spotrac, the first overall pick in the 2024 draft is expected to sign a contract worth $57 million over four years. Their rookie season, the player is expected to make $12.6 million.

It would also be delaying that first big extension most lottery picks perform well enough to get.

He’d be giving up a lot of money staying an additional year at Duke, but he is making several millions now and would make even more in NIL next year. Also, he is only 18 years old (December birthday). Staying an additional year, he’d only be 19 years old at the ‘26 draft. I would respect him even more than I currently do if he took a different path than the usual expected top pick and stayed in school for another year. It wouldn’t be good though for the teams that have intentionally decided to be poop for Coop.

Remember when Melo “considered” returning to Syracuse for his sophomore season right after the National Championship?

Yeah, he really had to think hard and long about his decision
His thinking about returning was very clear: "That would be crazy!"
Just like Flagg.

I was joking

I think I just read he’s making ~$4-5 million. Has a Gatorade contract.

Wonder if he could make more staying at Duke than the $10,474,200 first year salary that the first pick in the NBA would make? He’d be able to know and pick his coach, team and teammates at Duke.

Not adding in shoe contract.

One thing between Rick Pitino’s statement, Flagg’s supposed reluctance to leave college ball and the increasing $ acceleration for NIL, there could be a real drop in the number one and dones (maybe even 2 years and done) entries to the NBA.

His shoe contract would be in addition to his salary. Now it is included in his estimated total NIL package.

A lot of players potentially make more in college than the pros these days... Flagg is not one of them.
I'm suggesting his NBA shoe contract would be MUCH MUCH more than a college shoe deal

There are indeed a lot of NBA teams that are in the bag for Flagg.

He should keep banking NIL until whatever team with 1 overall agrees to trade him to his Celtics. They'd get back Brown Holiday and a bunch of firsts.

0.000000% chance. He's being polite.

Indeed, but he may also be genuine--he only said he wanted to stay not that he'd consider it.

Plenty of us would've loved to stay in college after our time was up and careers got in the way.

His New Balance sneaker deal is interesting. Because Duke is exclusive Nike, he can only wear Nike’s while both on the court and in all athletic facilities with Duke. When walking around campus and the community he can wear New Balance.

Can't believe that happening for a second.
But imagine if he came back to Duke and is joined by the Boozer twins.

The thing is, unless I’m way off he would have been a high school senior this year. His team won the Maine State Tournament when he was in 9th grade. He transferred to Monteverde as a 10th grader and spent 2 years there (10th and 11th grade). He graduated early and went to Duke. Kids still just a kid.
