In our discussion last year, we introduced the notion that perhaps teams who are “lucky” are well-coached. One team in particular who was lucky in 2013 was Syracuse, who had 2.1 more wins than expected. Part of the reason for this was how well they performed in one-goal games. The Orange played in more one goal games than any team in 2013 and thanks to coach John Desko and some great senior leadership, they were able to win a higher percentage of these games.
In 2014, it was once again the case that Syracuse was, in fact, lucky. In terms of the difference between actual winning percentage and expected winning percentage, Syracuse ranked 9th in the country in 2014, implying that they, once again, won a higher percentage of games than the expectation model projected for them.
