I have come up with a theory that might finally make sense of some of this: It makes no sense for ESPN to have run the OTL segment without either including that tape, or at least waiting to verify it before ever running the segment at all... unless ESPN was aware of how bad it would look to say they have had it since 2002 and did nothing. So, instead, they run the segment intentionally leaving out the tape in hopes of others coming forward or baiting some sort of other evidence/admission of guilt. I think that ESPN was hoping that they didn't have to release the tape (which also might explain why ESPN seemed so bent on making it seem like the SPD had the tape and was covering it up; that would take the focus off of why ESPN had done nothing with it). However, because nothing else came out and the OTL segment had spawned significant backlash over irresponsible journalism and lack of evidence, they were compelled to release the tape to defend themselves. I think ESPN knows they look bad for having sat on the tape for 9 years, but after the Sandusky shenanigans they didn't want to be responsible for not doing anything about it. The worst case scenario for ESPN would have been if Davis went to another network, gave them all the same evidence and interviews, then told that network that he had given ESPN everything back in 2002. ESPN would be in deep if that had happened, especially considering how late they were with the Sandusky story. Again, just a theory, but its the only way I can make sense of OTL running that shallow segment without releasing the tape along with it.
